County Board amends buffer zone ordinance

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners amended its recently adopted buffer ordinance to comply with the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BOWSR) at its Tuesday, June 19, meeting.
Ryan Freitag of the McLeod Soil and Water Conservation District said BOWSR “did not agree with the administrative penalty” portion of the county’s ordinance. When the County Board approved its ordinance in October 2017, it had agreed to a sliding scale of fines, which it could adapt to the severity of violations or the progress, or lack of progress, in complying with the ordinance.

Trailblazer seeks improved service in Sibley County

Trailblazer Transit is hoping to improve transportation service in the sparsely populated western Sibley County area, and the Joint Powers Board took steps Thursday morning to accomplish that.
First, Trailblazer Transit Executive Director Gary Ludwig suggested dedicating one bus from the fleet to the area.
In addition, Ludwig suggested adding New Ulm to Trailblazer’s service area. However, that means working out an agreement with Brown County Heartland Express, which provides transit service in Brown County. New Ulm is located in Brown County.

Trailblazer board debates next step after director’s performance review

The Trailblazer Transit Joint Powers Board had two closed sessions — once in April and one in May — to evaluate the job performance of Executive Director Gary Ludwig. The question some board members had at its June meeting, held Thursday, is what comes next?
According to the minutes from the board’s May meeting, Ludwig “received an evaluation of meets expectations and goals have been set for the future.”
However, Sibley County Commissioner Jim Swanson said he feels the evaluation wasn’t quite finished in that there didn’t seem to be “clarity on how to meet expectations for the next year.”

New chiropractor joins Pure Life Chiropractic & Wellness Center

Stewart woman launches business with help from SWIF microloan

Graphic artist Janey Oberg is launching her own design business with help from Southwest Initiative Foundation’s (SWIF) Microenterprise Loan Program. Designs by Jane will offer sign, print, promotional and logo designs — “business cards to billboards and everything in between.”
Oberg, who makes her home in Stewart, has an associates degrees in design and marketing and multimedia design technology. She’s built a portfolio of work spanning 14 years, including design positions with the Hutchinson Leader and Herald Journal newspapers as well as Greater Minnesota Printing and Data Management.

McLeod County 4-H’ers attend Regional 4-H Camp June 19-21

Four campers and one counselor from McLeod County attended the 2018 Regional 4-H Camp: Chloe Lucas, Kyleigh Lucas, Travis Mohs, Aubrey Schmidt and Counselor Emily Ward.
The Regional 4-H Camp is a unique camping opportunity for youth who have completed third through sixth grades. The camp was held at the University of Minnesota Morris campus June 19-21. There were 108 youth from 12 counties participating in the annual 4-H Camp. In addition, 28 teenage youth who were trained to be camp counselors provided leadership during camp.

South Dakota woman injured in accident

A South Dakota woman was injured late Saturday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 212 near Brownton.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Mary Oleen Malo, 71, of Brookings, South Dakota, was eastbound on Highway 212 in a 2017 Toyota Rav4 when her vehicle crossed the center line and struck a trailer being towed by a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado being driven by Nicholas Jerome Kotten, 34, of Hutchinson.

Hutchinson man arrested after two-vehicle accident

Kyle Ondracek, 24, of Hutchinson, was arrested Monday, June 18, after the car he was driving rear-ended a pickup parked on the side of the road on Page Avenue near 120th Street, north of Brownton.
According to the McLeod County Sheriff’s Office, Ondracek was driving a 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, owned by Justin Sits of Hutchinson, when it rear-ended a 1992 Chevrolet GM4 owned by Jonah Skelley, 37, of Hutchinson.

Common Cup starts annual school supplies collection

Common Cup Ministries’ annual collection of school supplies for the students of McLeod County has now begun. Last year supplies were provided for approximately 500 students, kindergarten through college age. This year Common Cup is expecting the need to be the same. Common Cup relies on individuals, churches, and community organizations for the donations of needed supplies or dollars.
