GSL baseball falls one step short of state

Despite making their deepest playoff foray in three seasons, the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team fell one step short of qualifying for state for the first time since 2015 after falling to Maple Lake in the championship round of the 5AA bracket last week.
The Panthers’ season came to an end with a 19-7 record after a 13-3 loss to the Irish at Vollmer Field on Thursday, June 7.
Maple Lake handed GSL both of its sectional losses during the tournament, having also squeaked by the Panthers, 2-1, in the winner’s bracket final on Monday, June 4.

Panthers earn three medals at state Class A meet

It was a successful close to the 2017-18 sports season for Glencoe-Silver Lake as three members of the Panther track and field teams earned their way onto the medal stand at the state Class A track and field meet last weekend.
Connor Kantack, Zoe Christensen and Kyle Christensen all closed out their high school careers with state medals for their efforts.
Kantack started the clicker on GSL’s state medal count with a third-place finish in boys’ shot put on Friday, June 8.

Brewers handle Hamburg

The Glencoe Brewers got back on the good foot last week by halting a two-game losing streak with a 5-3 defeat of Hamburg on Wednesday, June 6, at Vollmer Field.
Glencoe, which had suffered losses of 12-4 to Hutchinson and 10-0 at St. Boni to close out the month of May, opened June by hanging on to beat the Hawks despite claiming just half the hits of the visiting side.
The Brewers scored five runs on just five hits, with Tyler Chap smacking an all-important two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning as part of a 2-for-3 evening at the plate.

Blue Jays batter Brownton

It was the team’s only game of the first half of June, but the Plato Blue Jays made it count with an 11-2 win at Brownton on Wednesday, June 6.
Plato never trailed in the contest, scoring three runs in the top of the second inning, and then going on to blow open a 6-2 contest with a five-run ninth inning en route to the win.
The Blue Jays’ pitching combination of starter Chris Odegaard and reliever Adam Prehn combined to allow just six hits, one walk and two earned runs while striking out 10. Odegaard claimed the win, Prehn notched a four-inning save.
