Little to show as legislative session ends

After last year’s legislative session, one had hopes that Minnesota’s DFL governor and its Republican-controlled Legislature would learn to compromise more and make a bipartisan effort to pass effective tax and budget bills.
One also knew that hope was probably hollow at best — our state leaders seem to have little desire to let go of their staunch positions and try to work out an agreement.

It’s costing a lot of cash to build a hole

By Rich Glennie
In its latest effort to beautify the city, Glencoe leaders have plopped a large hole in the ground in a residential area and called it a holding pond. Impressive.
The newest ponds are part of the central storm water project, and this particular one is located at the corner of Ives Avenue and 13th Street. All the trees have been removed, the hole is being drilled under the nearby railroad tracks and the new piping will be installed forthwith.
We seem to be building a lunar landscape around the community with all our holding ponds.

Would like to see rural residential recycling

To the Editor:
I was glad to see the editorial on recycling contamination in the paper recently.

Grateful for help on behalf of U.S. Highway 212

To the Editor:
I would like to thank my colleagues from McLeod County, Doug Krueger and Joe Nagel, along with McLeod County Engineer John Brunkhorst, for all of their support as we have worked for a safer and more effective highway system in our area of the state. Having a strong, diverse coalition of partners all advocating for needed improvements in critical freight corridors makes a big difference.

Council takes action on proposed apartment complex

By Rich Glennie

A flurry of motions and resolutions were approved Monday night by the Glencoe City Council involving the proposed Panther Heights 2nd Addition apartment project. Included were approval of a feasibility study of the 14th Street extension, approval of a new tax increment financing (TIF) district and the sale of the property to the developer, Glencoe Multifamily, LLC, for $1.
The feasibility study is the first step of the development process, according to Justin Black, city engineering consultant from Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH), Inc.

City Council votes 3-2 to raise storm water rates

By Rich Glennie
Correspondent
The Glencoe City Council on Monday night approved a storm water rate increase to $12.50 a month per household, up from the current $7.50 a month. City Administrator Mark Larson said the rate increase is necessary to help pay for the 2018 storm water bond issue.
But the vote was 3-2 with council members Milan Alexander and Allen Robeck voting no. Voting for the increase were council members Gary Ziemer, John Schrupp and Cory Neid.
Larson said the city needs to generate about $205,000 a year to pay for the bond issue.
