Silver Lake is a small community driven by philanthropy and volunteering; community urbanism is the catalyst for projects and maintenance that extend beyond the financial scope of the city. Harvey Mikolichek was, and continues to be, at the forefront of Silver Lake community volunteerism. He’s simultaneously the synergist that partnered organizations and individuals in Silver Lake and the adhesive that keeps them together.

In workshop session Monday afternoon, Glencoe City Council met with Ryan Norman of DeWild Grant Reckert and Associates Company (DGR Engineering) to get a second opinion of the city’s proposed $20 million to $23 million wastewater treatment plant project.
Norman was asked to clarify the question about how a treatment plant DGR designed in Sheldon, Iowa, a community about the size of Glencoe, could come in at half the price of Glencoe’s renovation/expansion project. And Sheldon’s plant was new, compared to Glencoe’s plans that repair and expand its older plant.

Silver Lake officer in accident

Part-time Silver Lake Police Officer Ross McMullen was involved in a two-vehicle accident, Thursday, July 19. McMullen was heading southbound on County Road 2 in the department’s 2017 Ford Explorer to provide mutual aid to the McLeod County Sheriff’s Department.

Brewers enter playoffs on a skid

After closing out the regular season with a pair of losses, the Glencoe Brewers began the Region 7C playoffs this week against Waconia.
Glencoe its best-of-three series versus the Lakers at Vollmer Field on Tuesday, July 24, after the Chronicle went to press.
Game 2 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Waconia. If necessary, a deciding contest is slated for 2 p.m. Sunday in Waconia.
The Brewers wrapped up their regular season with a 7-15 overall record and a 5-12 mark in Crow River Valley League play after dropping its final two pre-playoff contests last week.

Season ends for VFW Post 5102

A pair of losses in the District 2 sub-district playoffs last week ended the summer season for the Glencoe VFW Post 5102 baseball team.
Glencoe fell 7-1 in the playoff opener on Monday, July 16.
Reece Schwirtz scored the team’s lone run, with Jake Christianson and Blake Mickolichek netting the only hits in the defeat.
Mickolichek started on the mound and suffered the loss in his final outing of the season. He struck out three batters, while allowing five walks and two hits. Schwirtz also pitched in the game.
Post 5102 returned to action the next day to take on Dassel-Cokato.

Bruins win regular-season finale vs. Cologne

Some late-inning heroics and a sparkling pitching performance by Seth Schuette earned the Brownton Bruins a 3-0 win over Cologne in the regular-season finale on Sunday, July 22, at Barney Tadsen Field.
Schuette tossed a one-hitter at the Hollanders, coming within one out of tossing a no-hitter before an infield single in the top of the ninth. He struck out seven batters, while hitting another three, but allowed no walks.
