Fall sports season is nearly upon us

The weather does not feel anything like fall as of yet, but the local athletic calendar is already turning to the autumn season.
Monday, Aug. 13, was the first day of practice for the Glencoe-Silver Lake sports teams as Panther student/athletes came together both indoors and outside to begin the process of honing their craft for the fast-approaching competitive season.
Scrimmages are scheduled by this week’s end for both girls’ tennis and soccer teams, with the netters also slated to begin competitions within the next week.

Plato heads to state as region champs

With a pair of weekend victories over Young America, the Plato Blue Jays are headed to their fifth consecutive state tournament as the Region 7C champions.
Plato, which earlier cruised to a Crow River Valley League championship with a 17-1 league record, increased their winning streak to 18 games by finishing off a perfect 4-0 regional run.
“All season long, these guys have really worked hard,” Blue Jays manager Adam Dammann said. “We had some things to work through earlier this season, but these guys really have confidence in each other.”

Bruins fall just short of state appearance

A scintillating second-half run for the Brownton Bruins came up one game short of the promised land after a heart-wrenching loss to Carver at the Region 7C Tournament on Friday, Aug. 10.
The Bruins entered the regional as the seventh seed out of eight teams, only to stun No. 2 seed Watertown in the tournament opener on Aug. 4.
Brownton narrowly lost its second round game to Young America the next day to drop into the one-loss bracket against Carver – setting up a showdown in which the victor goes to the state tournament and the loser sees its season end.
