Donald W. ‘Donnie’ Schrader, 75, of Plato

Donald W. “Donnie” Schrader, 75, of Plato passed away Thursday Aug. 16 at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.
A funeral service was held Monday, Aug. 20, 11 a.m., at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato officiated by Rev. Tyson Mastin. Visitation was Sunday Aug. 19, from 4 to 7 p.m., and one hour prior to the service all at the church. Interment with military honors by the Plato American Legion at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Plato.


Sonju explains operations levy

Hard to believe that we are in August and another new school year is right around the corner. I hope that this letter finds you enjoying your summer. Practices for fall activities have started and as we move closer and closer to the start of the school year, I want to take this opportunity to update our district members on a few things.


Remeber, red means stop

I’m not sure when it became optional to stop for stop signs, but that seems to be the case lately. Otherwise, why would motorists do the stupid things they do?
I see it every day in my neighborhood on 14th Street and Judd Avenue, where there is a four-way stop with flashing red lights that indicate First Lutheran School is nearby. Yet, some people don’t see the signs.


Our view: Push the school district to explain its case for levy increase

In addition to candidates for local, state and national office this fall, the general election ballot residents in the Glencoe-Silver Lake School District will include a request for voters to approve the school district’s request for additional funding to operate its schools. The school board is well within its right and obligation to ask property owners to approve an operating levy increase resulting in a property tax increase.


6 file for 3 seats on GSL board, other races develop for Nov. 6

A few local races have developed for the Nov. 6 election. The filing period for local municipal and school board seats closed on Aug. 14. Jason Lindeman, of Brownton, has filed for re-election for the Glencoe-Silver Lake School. Valarie Bandas, Andrea Janke, James Entinger, Jon Lemke, all of Glencoe, and Alicia Luckhardt have also filed for spots on the board. The positions are currently held by Lindeman, Anne Twiss and Clark Christenson


Commissioners talk property valuations, market adjustments

The regular Tuesday morning (Aug. 21) county board meeting was a fruitful example of political expediency. The board, most prominently, discussed the sale of a squad car to Brownton for $6,000, heard valuation trends and market adjustments and heard a presentation from the Southwest Initiative Foundation (SWIF), and heard public input about property tax formula changes.


Fire destroys rural Stewart man’s shed

Earl Pagenkopf was sitting in his home last Wednesday morning, Aug. 15, when through a window he saw a woman hurriedly walking up his driveway around 10:30 a.m. He had no idea the news the woman was about to deliver.
“I don’t know why she didn’t drive up to the house,” he said.
The woman told Pagenkopf the shed behind his house on 190th Street in northwest Sibley County’s Grafton Township was on fire. Pagenkopf called firefighters and hustled out to the shed. He approached the structure but was pushed back by the heat and thick, black smoke.


Farm to early care a priority for local head start program

Getting kids to eat vegetables is no small task. That’s why the Tri-Valley Opportunity Council’s (TVOC) head start programs are taking a different approach. Through the Farm to Early Care program, TVOC is working to introduce vegetables early.
The organization introduces new fruits and vegetables every couple of weeks in the 15 head start centers across the state and one in North Dakota, including the migrant and seasonal center located in Glencoe.


School district Helping students, families with more than learning

In a small closet just off the Glencoe-Silver Lake School District's administrative offices, a cache of items, which unto themselves won’t help students learn, awaits distribution.
Without them education would be far more difficult.


Glencoe, area voters stick with winners in GOP, DFL primary

Voters in last Tuesday's Republican and DFL primary elections mostly favored the overall winners, regardless of whether or not their candidates were the favored choices of the respective political parties.
Voters favoring for Republicans in the Aug. 14 primary election in the state and congressional races primarily stuck with the candidates endorsed by the party. Mitzi Shimanksi, chairperson of the McLeod County Republicans, was concerned former Gov. Tim Pawlenty might win after snubbing the party’s endorsing process.
