Blue Jays reclaim state championship

After overcoming two tall hurdles and then sprinting down “Redemption Road,” the Plato Blue Jays celebrated a state championship on Monday, Sept. 3, defeating the Sobieski Skis 8-5 in the Class C championship game at Memorial Park in New Prague.
“It is the goal at the start of every season – go win the state title,” manager Adam Dammann said. “We knew we had a good team and thought we had a strong chance.
“Now we’ve done it and it is awesome. I am so proud of these guys.”

County to acquire Jungclaus property for $2.1 million

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners breezed through their agenda yesterday, Sept. 4. The board closed its meeting for discussion, and when it reconvened in an open session, decided to go ahead with the purchase of the Jungclaus Implement dealership and surrounding properties for just over $2.4 million.

Loretta A. (Fieber) Ide, 97, of Glencoe

Loretta Anna (Fieber) Ide, age 97, of Glencoe, passed away Saturday, Aug. 25 at her home in Orchard Estates in Glencoe. Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, Aug. 31, 3 p.m., at Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe, with interment following at the Glencoe Catholic Cemetery in Glencoe.
The Rev. Anthony Stubeda officiated the ceremony and Mary Ann Thalmann was the pianist. Denise Lueders was the songleader. The musical selections were “Here I Am Lord,” “Hosea,” “Hail Mary, Gentle Women,” “Song Of Farewell,” and “How Great Thou Art.”
Mrs. Ide’s grandchildren were the casket-bearers.

Isabel Marie Karg, 21, of Glencoe

Isabel Marie Karg, 21, of Glencoe passed away Tuesday, Aug. 28, at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina. Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, Sept. 5, 11:30 a.m., at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Minnetonka, with internment at First Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Glencoe.
Rev. John Bauer and Rev. Patrick Hipwell officiated the ceremony.

Kenneth H. Mackenthun, 86, of Plato

Kenneth Herbert Mackenthun, 86, of Plato, passed away Monday, Aug. 27 at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long-Term Care in Glencoe.

As the Minnesota State Fair wraps up another year, now begins the wait for a chance to see or participate in it again next year. Many things are impressive about McLeod County’s ties to the state fair. Facts like this year the president of the State Fair Board is Lynn Township resident Paul Merkins. This honor has happened to a McLeod County resident only two other times in history. We recognize many local farms that bring their livestock to compete in the Great Minnesota Get Together and watch a trail of ribbons follow them home to show their accomplishments.

Pedestrian bridge over Highway 212 in Glencoe will undergo maintenance this week

The Highway 212 pedestrian bridge on the west side of Glencoe will undergo maintenance operations this week, beginning Sept. 4. There will be a lane closed in each direction under the bridge and the bridge will be closed to pedestrian use while crews paint the bridge.
MnDOT urges motorists to always drive with caution, and reminds them to slow down in the work zone and never enter a roadway that has been blocked with barriers or cones.
