Buffalo Creek BMX Track celebrates 10 years of racing

In 2007, Ryan Voss ran an ad in the local newspaper looking for volunteers to help build a bicycle motocross (BMX) track in Glencoe. Saturday, Sept. 22, Voss, Wade Drew and Mark Janke stopped by to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the BMX track they helped build.
“We met at the old library,” Drew said, one of the two men who showed up to see what Voss's idea was all about.


Area farmers feeling impact of hefty U.S., foreign tariffs

United States Secretary of Agriculture Sonny √ recently launched the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) trade mitigation package of up to $12 billion for farmers around the country. The package is intended to assist farmers amidst an unsettling trade war that continues to inch down profit margins — a quasi-irreversible, bitter reality farmers have been battling since before the Trump presidency.


County Board eyes tax hike for 2019

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners convened for a special meeting yesterday, Tuesday, Sept. 25, with only one item on the agenda: “Consider approval of the 2019 Preliminary Levy.” The board finalized its preliminary levy for 2019 at $22,614,592 — an increase of 7.1 percent. The board expects to increase total expenses by about $4 million.
A 7.1 percent increase amounts to about $1. Million more than last year.


Alfred Burdorf, 95, of Arlington

Alfred Burdorf, 95, of Arlington, passed away Monday, Sept. 24, at Golden Hearts Senior Living Center in Arlington.
Funeral services will be at Saturday, Sept. 29, 11 a.m., at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Arlington with interment in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to service time Saturday all at the church.
Kolden Funeral Home of Arlington is handling the arrangements.

Edwin Ellis, 92, of Glencoe, passed away Thursday, Sept. 20, at his home.
Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, Sept. 27, 11 a.m., at Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe, with interment following in the Glencoe Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Sept. 26, 5-8 p.m., at Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Thursday.
