New transportation study will benefit area

Last week, both the Glencoe City Council and the McLeod County Board of Commissioners agreed to foot a share of the cost of a new Minnesota Department of Transportation study on the Glencoe area.
The vast majority of the cost of the study — estimated at $150,000 — will be picked up by MnDOT. The state transportation department is asking that the two other transportation entities that are involved — the city of Glencoe and McLeod County — pick up 10 percent of the cost, or $15,000. That results in a net cost to each of $7,500.

More surprises in the squirrel battle

By Rich Glennie
Well, I thought I had seen it all in my battles with neighborhood squirrels. I discovered recently, there is more to see.
It all began with our recent snowstorm that dumped at least 20 inches of the white stuff onto the nearly dried-out yards in town. It crushed our hopes for spring … again. In what seemed like an instant, the spring-like scenery vanished under the new powder of white.

2018 record-setting drive for local food shelf

Handshakes and high-fives all around McLeod County for making 2018 a record-setting year!

Mission accomplished: First Lutheran 8th-graders find soldier’s relatives

For some students, history class tends to be among the least exciting. “Why do we have to learn about old, dead people?” “There’s no point in learning history—it already happened,” are a couple of recycled cliches that reflects students’ aversion to history. “(History) was just another class,” said Dean Scheele, principal and teacher at First Lutheran School in Glencoe.

County to replace fairgrounds pavilion

McLeod County is hoping to have its new fairgrounds pavilion in place by county fair time in August.
At its Tuesday, April 17, meeting, the McLeod County Board of Commissioners approved a low base bid of $246,300 from Alliance Building Corporation of Sauk Rapids to construct the new pavilion. It also approved a quote of $68,249 from Ben’s Structural Fabrication, Inc., of Waite Park, to provide the structural steel for the pavilion.

Trailblazer asked to participate in 5-year transit system plan

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is working with the Minnesota Public Transit Association (MPTA) to develop a five-year plan to improve transit services in the state.
The Trailblazer Transit Joint Powers Board heard from MnDOT transit officials Tom Gottfried and John Groothuis about the plan at its Friday morning meeting.
Groothuis said the ultimate goal of the plan is to “make sure everyone has access” to public transit.
Currently, there are about 40 transit systems outside the metro area, including Trailblazer Transit. Each has its own service area.
