Brownton council hears plans for tax-forfeited properties

Brownton citizens will hopefully see a cleaned-up grocery store site on its main street soon.
The former grocery store, located on Fourth Avenue North, has fallen into disrepair, with bricks falling off the building and the roof caving in. The city has placed a fence around the lot to keep pedestrians out of the area.
Bruce Turner, told the Brownton City Council at its Jan. 2 meeting that his first goal is to begin hauling away the debris and to secure the building.

Stewart struggles with finding daytime emergency medical responders

The city of Stewart is looking for ways to beef up its emergency medical responder (more commonly known as first responder) crew, and to address staffing shortages during daytime hours.
Carol Nelson, captain of the emergency medical responders (EMRs), said the unit had recently changed its protocol to allow the unit to have just one EMR respond as long as a deputy is on scene. In the past, the protocol was to have at least two EMRs on board the truck before responding.

SL City Council makes annual appointments

Silver Lake Mayor Bruce Bebo made his annual appointments at the City Council’s organizational meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 2.

Rural Glencoe shed destroyed by fire

Fire destroyed a shed and two vehicles on Harvest Road north of Glencoe Sunday night.
Glencoe Fire Chief Ron Grack said the department received the page at about 6:30 p.m., and was on scene for about three hours.
The shed was fully involved when the department arrived, Grack added. The approximately 30-foot by 40-foot shed was located at the Wayne and Kim Strong property. The shed was a wood-frame building lined with tin.
Grack said his department was aided by Silver Lake with a tanker and manpower, and water tanker trucks from Lester Prairie and Hutchinson.

Applications open for MARL Class X

Applications are now being accepted for the Minnesota Agriculture and Rural Leadership (MARL) Class X.
MARL is a dynamic two-year educational experience featuring nine three-day in-state seminars, a six-day national study seminar and a 10- to 14-day international study seminar. Its mission is to develop the skills of Minnesota’s agricultural and rural leaders so they may maximize their impact and effectiveness in local, state, national and international arenas.

Plato woman escapes injury in crash

A Plato woman escaped injury when her vehicle was rear-ended in Mankato Wednesday, Jan. 3.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Alissa Ann Ramthun, 22, of Plato, was driving a 2014 Ford Focus northbound on Highway 22 and had stopped at a stoplight at North Victory Drive in Mankato. Emily Ann Aiken, 32, of Eagle Lake, also was northbound on Highway 22, in a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer, and had stopped behind Ramthun’s vehicle. When the light turned green, the Mountaineer rear-ended the Focus.

Durbins welcome new son

Tyler and Alyson Durbin of Lester Prairie announce the arrival of a son, Oliver Gerald, who was born Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia. Oliver weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces, and was 20 inches long. He joins a sister, Avery Lucille. Grandparents are Chad and Nicole Teubert of Lester Prairie, Monica Nygren Good of Bemidji and Tina and the late Gerald Durbin of Brownton. Great-grandparents are Sandra Anderson of Lester Prairie, Alan and Joan Teubert of Hutchinson, Mark Nygren of Eden Prairie and Marlene Novak of Brownton.

Girl born to Glencoe couple

Angelica Cavazos and Leonardo Vargas Sr. of Glencoe announce the birth of their daughter, Hennessy Rene Vargas, who arrived Jan. 4, 2018, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Hennessy weighed 6 pounds, 15 ounces, and was 20 inches long at birth. She is welcomed by her siblings Matilde and Leonardo Jr. and her grandmother Maria Marquez of Brownsville, Texas.

Dordings welcome baby girl

Elisa and Ryan Dording of Glencoe announce the birth of their daughter Claire Marie Dording, who arrived Jan. 4, 2018, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Claire weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces at birth. She is welcomed by her brother Alex.
