Feds need to be careful with China trade

Back in January, those who attended the McLeod County Corn and Soybean Growers’ annual banquet heard guest speaker Mike Pearson, an ag commentator from Iowa, paint a rosy future for agriculture.
While Pearson touted technological changes that will impact the future of agriculture with increased efficiencies, the real place the ag economy will boom, he said, is in the global market.

Twitter-in-Chief busy stroking his ego

By Rich Glennie
Our Twitter-in-Chief … “The Twit” for short … is still at it. President Trump continues to tweet his edicts to his loyal followers from his throne somewhere in the White House. Does this guy ever sleep?
If you didn’t know better you would think he anointed himself as king or dictator. Who needs the Constitution, or that pesky balance of powers. By the way, where is Congress in all this current chaos?

Grack retires from fire department; steps down from 8-year role as chief

After serving as Glencoe’s fire chief for nearly eight years, Ron Grack decided 2018 is the year to retire. Looking forward to retirement, for Grack, is a double-edged sword. He’s excited about the extra time he’ll get to spend with his family, friends, tent and fishing rod; however, he admitted that it’ll be strange to take no action when he hears sirens.

Former Gaylord chief, Army veteran, joins Glencoe Police staff

The Glencoe Police Department is bringing in a new captain, Tony Padilla, to help solidify Glencoe as the fifth safest city in Minnesota.
Padilla used to serve in Gaylord as chief of police and worked for the McLeod County Sheriff's Office as a part-time deputy. He also served in the Army, starting out as an infantryman without a high school diploma. Throughout his 24 years of service, he advanced to one of the army’s most prestigous roles — sergeant major —and walked out with a bachelor’s degree in police science.

School Board discusses fund balance, parking lot, possible levy referendum

On Monday, April 9, the Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) School Board convened to have first discussions on meeting the district’s 20 percent fund balance policy, the possibility of abatement bonds specifically for parking lot reconstruction, and the operating levy referendum
The meeting started with audial technical issues, and board members agreed there’s no room in the budget for a new sound system. Though a comical gesture, it was a suitable precursor for the conversations that followed.

Kounkel joins Chronicle as city, school reporter

Jakob Kounkel has joined The McLeod County Chronicle as a staff writer.
Kounkel’s main beats will be the Glencoe City Council, Glencoe-Silver Lake School District and feature stories.
“My goal as a writer is to report on government and politics at the highest level, and to reach as many people as I can with my writing and ideas,” said Kounkel.
Kounkel comes to The Chronicle from Monticello, where he was born and raised.
Kounkel said that while growing up, Monticello was similar in population to Glencoe, but now has grown to over 13,000 residents.

April 18 open house planned for county’s proposed cement stabilization road projects

McLeod County is currently planning construction projects on County Road 54 (Tagus Avenue) from Sunset Circle to County Road 7 and County Road 62 (Nature Avenue and 125th Street).
The projects include blending cement powder and water with portions of the existing gravel surface and subgrade material to create a hardened base layer. Once the base is stabilized with cement, the road will then be covered with a chip seal similar to what is applied on paved asphalt roads. The purpose of the chip seal is to protect the stabilized base from weather and to act as a wear surface.

Stewart City Council pleased with bids for street, utility project

The Stewart City Council was pleased Monday night to learn that bids for the street and utility improvement project had come in much lower than anticipated.
Engineer Andy Kehren of Bolton & Menk said the city had received six bids, the lowest coming from LaTour Construction, Inc., of Maple Lake, in the amount of $2.72 million, which was 9 percent lower than the engineer’s estimate of $2.93 million.
The proposed project includes work on Powers, Croyden, Grove, Bowman, Mowbray, East, Herbert and South streets.

City of Brownton waiting on Rural Development approval of project bids

The Brownton City Council opened bids on the underground utilities and street surface portions of its comprehensive utility improvement project nearly a month ago, but may have to have a special meeting to actually award the bid.
John Rodeberg, engineer with Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH), Inc., said at the City Council’s April 3 meeting that the bid still needs to be approved by Rural Development of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
“It’s a great bid, but it hasn’t been approved yet by Rural Development,” said Rodeberg.
