Council votes 4-1 to approve Morningside agreement

In an about-face, the Glencoe City Council Monday night authorized Mayor Randy Wilson and City Administrator Mark Larson to sign a cooperative agreement with McLeod County to proceed with plans to extend Morningside Avenue north of 11th Street near Coborn’s to 16th Street near the high school.

Dollar General coming to former Economart space

After years of being a bare lot in downtown Glencoe, the former Mark’s Economart site at 11th Street and Greeley Avenue is looking at a new lease on life.
At Monday’s Glencoe City Council meeting, unanimous approval was given to a purchase agreement with Ratcliff Development, LLC, of Louisiana for $59,502.50, or $1.25 per square foot, for the 1.3-acre site. The site will be the future home of Dollar General, a national retail store.

Maker Space adds a little extra to GSL’s STEM program

Glencoe-Silver Lake’s Lincoln Elementary School put its new Maker Space Lab into operation last week.
The lab is located in the new school addition’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) room, and is an extra, voluntary component of the STEM program.
“Maker Space is a great way for students to use their skills and knowledge they have acquired through our PLTW (Project Lead The Way) STEM modules and go above and beyond,” wrote Heather Peirce in a letter to parents and guardians. Peirce is the STEM lead teacher at Lincoln Elementary.

Multi-family housing proposed east of Grand Meadows

The Glencoe City Council Monday night approved offering $100,000 for five acres of land east of Grand Meadows on 14th Street to use for multi-family housing. The apartment project would be in the Panther Heights subdivision in the east end of Glencoe.

Brownton Council, Collins Township debate fire service contract

The Collins Town Board approached the Brownton City Council Monday night about reducing the amount it pays the city for fire protection for the nine township sections that are in the Brownton Fire District.
The fire department serves the city of Brownton, as well as portions of Collins, Sumter, Round Grove and Penn townships.
The township contends that the price it is charged for fire protection is far more than it is charged for sections in the Stewart and Hutchinson fire districts.

Brownton to call for bids on comprehensive project

The city of Brownton’s estimated $8.4 million comprehensive street and utility project is finally going out for bids.
The City Council heard Monday night that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development program had approved the plans and specifications.
John Rodeberg with Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH), Inc., the city’s engineering consulting firm, said bids are due Feb. 28, and likely will be awarded at the April 3 City Council meeting.

GSL varsity Knowledge Bowl wins home meet

On Saturday, Feb. 3, Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) hosted many of the Knowledge Bowl teams from Region 6 at GSL High School. Teams from Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (ACGC), Central Minnesota Christian School (CMCS), Hutchinson, Lac qui Parle Valley, Lester Prairie, MACCRAY, Montevideo, New London-Spicer, Renville County West, Willmar and Yellow Medicine East were all there.
GSL Varsity 1 won the varsity meet.

Knowledge Bowlers compete at Elk River

The Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) Knowledge Bowlers went to Elk River Saturday , Jan. 27, for a large meet of St. Cloud region teams. Albany, Annandale, Big Lake, Buffalo, Foley, Litchfield, Melrose, Monticello, North Branch, Princeton, Rogers, Sartell, Sauk Rapids, several St. Cloud schools, St. John’s Prep, and Watertown-Mayer were among the schools represented, with a total of 56 teams in the varsity division. There were another 37 teams in the junior varsity division, so this was quite a large meet.

One injured in 3-vehicle crash on Highway 7 Jan. 31

A three-vehicle accident on Highway 7 at Babcock Avenue, north of Lester Prairie, resulted in one injury Wednesday, Jan. 31, at about 6:33 a.m.

Charlotte E. Alpaugh, 59, of Carver

Charlotte Elizabeth (Wolter) Alpaugh, 59, of Carver, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018, at N.C. Little Hospice House in Edina.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 1, at the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe with the Rev. Anders Davidson officiating. Dawn Wolter was the organist. Congregational hymns were “Beautiful Stranger,” “I’m But a Stranger Here” and “Abide With Me.”
