The Panthers withstood a second-half rally as the Royals rallied from a 24-18 halftime deficit to knot the score at 58-58 after regulation and force overtime. However, GSL bounced back after losing the lead to outscore the visitors 12-7 in the extra session and win by five.

Girls' basketball remains in thick of WCC West race

After going 1-1 against its fellow Wright County Conference West frontrunners last week, the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team entered this week in second place in the conference standings with a 4-1 WCC West record.
A 64-55 loss at current conference leader Watertown-Mayer on Tuesday, Jan. 16, ended the Panthers’ four-game winning streak and dropped GSL out of the WCC West’s top spot.
Guard Mac Monahan led all scorers with 23 points and recorded five steals, but the Panthers could not climb out of a 35-27 halftime hole in the nine point loss.

4 Hutchinson residents hurt in accident

Four Hutchinson residents were injured Tuesday at about 5:40 p.m. in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 7 near McLeod County Road 16 in Silver Lake.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2007 Ford pickup driven by Dustin Plombon, 35, of Hutchinson, was westbound on Highway 7, and a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by Richard Arthur Krueger, 75, of Hutchinson, was southbound on County Road 16 when the vehicles collided at the intersection.

Glencoe man taken to hospital after crash

Kraig Charles Kunkel, 46, of Glencoe, was taken by ambulance to the Mayo Clinic Health System emergency room in Mankato after two semis collided on the Third Avenue ramp from Highway 14. Kunkel apparently suffered a medical emergency just prior to the accident.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Kunkel was eastbound on Highway 14 in a 2017 International grain semi and was exiting onto Third Avenue when he blacked out and his truck collided with a 2007 Freightliner semi driven by Christopher Allen Miest, 46, of Le Sueur. Miest was not injured.

Panther Pals program pairs up older, younger students

The Panther Pals program, organized by Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) teacher Teresa Kuester, kicked off a few weeks ago with five high school students signing up to use their study halls to help kindergarten, first-grade and second-grade students with one-on-one and small group reading and phonics lessons.
Seniors Alyssa Ebert and Tony Fischer, juniors Grace Kosek and Andrew Wraspir and foreign exchange student Jenske Boden are the first students to join the new program.
“I call them my Panther Pal Pioneers,” said Kuester, “because they’re just starting us out.”
