Janetta Ruth Augustine, 77, of Glencoe

Janetta Ruth (Rettig) Augustine, 77, of Glencoe, passed away Friday, Oct. 19, at her home at Grand Meadows Senior Living in Glencoe. This is the day the Lord of life and death granted eternal rest to his servant, Janetta. A memorial service was held Thursday, Oct. 25, 11 a.m., at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Auburn.
Pastor Keith Ainsley officiated the ceremony.
Charles Augustine was the reader for the ceremony and David Augustine delivered the eulogy.

Red Cross Bloodmobile plans stops in Glencoe, area communities

With an ongoing need for donated whole blood and the onset of the cold and flu season, the American Red Cross’ need for donors has intensified.
To keep up with demand, the Red Cross Bloodmobile is planning stops in Glencoe and the area next month. It will be in Glencoe at City Center Wednesday, Nov. 14, 1 to 7 p.m. City Center is at 1107 11th St. E.

Spilled gasoline sparks fire at Silver Lake auto shop

An accidental gasoline spill while a log splitter was running sparked a fire that destroyed two buildings at a Silver Lake auto repair shop Saturday morning.
Firefighters were dispatched at 11:20 a.m. to Anytime Auto on Falcon Avenue in Silver Lake. A fire started when a spark from a wood splitter ignited spilled gasoline, said Joel Zellmann, Anytime Auto’s owner.
Although two buildings on the 19900 block of Falcon Avenue were significantly damaged, Zellman had the business open from a temporary building on the property. He plans to rebuild the lost property.

Hallaway runs his way to state meet

Glencoe-Silver Lake freshman Connor Hallaway earned his place among the Class A’s elite as he qualified for his first state cross-country meet after finishing sixth at the Section 2A championship meet on Thursday, Oct. 25.
Hallaway led the Panther boys squad to a sixth-place team finish by navigating the 5,000-meter course at Montgomery National Golf Course in Montgomery with a sixth-place time of 16 minutes, 34.1 seconds.
Following Hallaway was a trio of seniors.
Ethan Knudten, took 24th in 17:33.8, Oscar Peña was 34th in 17:45.6, and Joe Knudten placed 35th in 17:53.1.

Girls cross-country qualifies for state meet

For the first time since 2004, Glencoe-Silver Lake will be represented at the girls’ Class A state cross-country meet after the Panthers earned a runner-up finish at the Section 2A championship meet on Thursday, Oct. 25, at Montgomery National Golf Course in Montgomery.
“They are very excited to make it,” coach Josh Metcalf said. “The girls were not ranked in the top six in the section preview, so they shocked a lot of teams.”

Panthers burned by Fire in football finale

A difficult season came to a close for the Glencoe-Silver Lake football team after a 40-7 loss at Holy Family Catholic in the second round of the Section 2AAA playoffs on Saturday, Oct. 27.
The defeat wrapped up the Panthers’ autumn with a 4-5 overall record after GSL took down Norwood Young America 32-6 in the playoff opener on Tuesday, Oct. 24.
The postseason opened with one final win for GSL on its home field as the Panthers converted four Raiders turnovers into 24 third-quarter points, turning a close game into a 26-point triumph.

Richard Wendlandt, 76, of Hamburg, passed away Saturday, Oct. 27, at Glencoe Regional Health Services in Glencoe.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 3, 10:30 a.m., at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg with interment following at the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 2, 4-7 p.m., at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg and will continue one hour prior to the service Saturday.

Elmer Raduenz, 81, of Plato, passed away Sunday, Oct. 28, at Sibley Medical Center in Arlington.

Renee Henning, 80, of Plato passed away Saturday, Oct. 27, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.
