Harlen A. Voight, 86, of Green Isle

Harlen A. Voight, 86, of Green Isle passed away Friday, Dec. 7, at his residence.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Green Isle. A visitation will be two hours prior to the service time Tuesday at the church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Kolden Funeral Home of Arlington is handling arrangements.
Harlen Albert Voight was born Feb. 11, 1932, in Glencoe to Albert and Emma (Harjes) Voight. He graduated from Arlington-Green Isle High School. Nov. 15, 1958, he married Lillie Ann Trnka at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Green Isle.

Richard J. Droege, 78, of Houston

Richard John ‘Dick’ Droege, 78, of Houston, Texas, passed away Thursday evening, Nov. 29, at Park Manor Nursing Home in South Houston, Texas.
A funeral service was held Monday, Dec. 3, at South Park Funeral Home in Pearland, Texas, with cremation at a later date. Pastor Alan Taylor from St. John’s Lutheran Church in Galveston, Texas was the officiating clergy.

GSL girls win a pair

After losing its season opener at home to close out November, the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team opened December in fine form with a pair of road wins to improve to 2-1 on the season.
The Panthers surged to their first win of the year at St. Peter on Tuesday, Dec. 4, taking a 31-16 halftime lead en route to a 47-33 victory.
Guard Miah Monahan paced GSL with 21 points and eight steals. Forward Kasidy Cacka led the squad with 10 rebounds; Monahan and Cacka each logged four assists. Guard Alison Kettner also chipped in 10 points.

Matmen claim two wins

It was a busy week for the Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team as the Panthers went 2-1 in a quadrangular meet at Sibley East on Thursday, Dec. 6, before placing 11th at a tournament in Chanhassen two days later.
GSL/LP defeated its hosts 39-30 at the Sibley East quad, and also claimed a 45-24 defeat of Saint Clair/Mankato Loyola. The wins sandwiched a 53-15 loss to Delano.
The Wolverines took an 18-0 lead before Carter Ruschmeier earned a 19-4 technical fall at 126 pounds and Sawyer Varpness won by fall at 132 to pull the Panthers to within 18-11.

Panthers third at Maple River Classic

While the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team did suffer its first loss of the season last week, the Panthers did earn a third-place tournament finish and enter this week with a 3-1 record.
GSL opened the month of December with a win in its first road game of the season, 77-69 at Belle Plaine, on Tuesday, Dec. 4.
The Panthers built on a 33-32 halftime lead to win by eight points as forward Gabe Roepke led the visitors with 20 points.
Forward Mitchel Jaskowiak scored 14 points while guards Dane Schwirtz and Michel Klockmann recorded 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Boys' cagers hitting the reset button

After slogging through a difficult 2017-18 season, the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team was eager to hit the reset button entering the new 2018-19 campaign.
“We’ve got a mixture of youth and seniors this season,” coach Robb DeCorsey said. “That helps keep us energetic.”
While last season’s 11-17 record was not the worst mark GSL has posted recently, the team ground down as the season wore on. Several of the defeats suffered by the Panthers were by double digits.

Willard Zarnott, 91, of Gaylord passed away Saturday, Dec. 8, at Ridgeview Sibley Medical Center in Arlington.
Funeral Service will be Thursday, Dec. 13, 11 a.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Gaylord with interment in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday, Dec. 13, 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
Memorials preferred to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Gaylord.

Alvin Wiechman, 88, of Stewart, passed away Thursday, Dec. 6, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.
Funeral service will be Thursday, Dec. 13, 11 a.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart, with interment in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 12, 5 to 8 p.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart and will continue Thursday, 10 a.m., for one hour prior to the service at the church.
