Fixing the broken democratic system is up to all of us

You no doubt remember the old line attributed to Ben Franklin when he was asked what kind of government the Constitutional Convention had created: “A republic, if you can keep it!”
Well, I’ve noticed an interesting thing in recent years: it’s got bi-partisan appeal.
Last fall, for instance, within a few weeks of each other House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi used it when she announced the impeachment inquiry and Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch, President Trump’s first court appointee, published a book using the line as its title.
This is not just an ironic coincidence.

Move forward — Our view: Time for city council to get back to work

Alexander’s proposal creates rift among city councilors

After encouraging his fellow council members to put aside their differences and work together for the good of the community on a broad range of issues, Councilor Milan Alexander’s proposal to limit the number of advisory boards and commissions a person can serve on, the length of time that person can serve and the number of votes it would take to remove a person from an advisory body effectively divided the city council Monday evening, Feb. 3.
