New Glencoe stores downtown strive to curate a ‘hometown feel’

New storefronts have been taking shape in Glencoe these past couple months as Mattress by Appointment and Nine Sparrows Boutique have flown into town.
Owners of both businesses want to provide more options for the community while maintaining the “hometown feel,” said Jordan Barthel, owner of Mattress by Appointment.
“We wanted to bring that hometown feel back into Glencoe,” Barthel said about his and his wife Cathy’s new store. “There’s not much in Glencoe, so it’s good to get small businesses like us back in the town. It’ll help us give back to the town too as we get going here.”

Panthers honored for standout efforts

Even though it was a fall sports season unlike any other, Glencoe-Silver Lake’s sports teams enjoyed standout performances, efforts worthy of post-season accolades.
Last week, the Wright County Conference released all-conference and all-conference/honorable mention winners in volleyball and cross-country running, football and soccer. This week, we’re presenting the honorees in volleyball and cross-country running. Next week’s edition of The Chronicle will include all-conference honorees in soccer and all-district accolades in football.

GSL-LP wrestlers pinned down in waiting mode

In a typical year, the Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team’s athletes would be preparing for an upcoming match.
Panthers coach Lance Wurm knows this year is anything but typical. He’s not even bothering to look at the latest version of his team’s schedule, the one listing opening day as Dec. 21 and the team’s first match slated for Jan. 12 at GSL against Delano and Mankato East.

Sen. Newman troubled by ‘slap on the wrist’ for activist

To the editor,
This week, Ramsey County prosecutors and defense attorneys for Mike Forcia, the activist who tore down a Christopher Columbus statue on capitol property in June, reached a plea agreement that will have Forcia perform 100 hours of community service, write a letter acknowledging the damage he caused, and remain on probation for one year.
My Senate committee led a series of hearings this summer investigating Twin Cities riots and lawlessness. Here is why I am troubled by the plea agreement:

COVID-19 survivors should donate convalescent plasma

To the editor,
Since last spring the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota reported that they were working with the FDA on a program to evaluate the use of convalescent plasma to a diverse group of 20,000 patients who were suffering from severe COVID cases in hospitals. Nearly 40 percent of the patients were women; 20 percent African Americans; nearly 35 percent Hispanic and 5 percent Asian.

Kudos, area cities –– Our view: Minor can be OK

Belle Plaine City Councilor Cary Coop is renowned for welcoming the opportunity to speak with constituents, whether they voted for him or not, regarding the level of taxation and the city’s operating budget. Well known as a Democrat in a city of primarily Republican voters, Coop only set one condition when a constituent wanted the levy or city budget reduced.
The person would have to be directly impacted by any cut expected.
