Upstart Bruins come up just short at state baseball tourney

Brownton pushes Isanti into extra innings

Although the Brownton Bruins left the state tournament on the wrong end of a 3-2 score in 11 innings Sunday, the team earned the respect of the Redbirds, champions of Section 1C.
“The 'Birds defeated a very good Brownton Bruins baseball team in the Class C State Tournament today. The game was like a very competitive dog fight, with neither team wanting to give an inch,” according to the Isanti team’s website.

GSL ready for football season opener tomorrow at Little Falls

Typically, football teams enjoy having plenty of bulk – and lots of it – to overwhelm opponents. The Glencoe-Silver Lake football team plans to take on its opponents with speed, quickness and guile this fall.
The Panthers lack both the bulk they enjoyed in recent years and the depth football teams enjoy having available when players are injured or weary. As a team that plans to run more than it passes, GSL will rely on quickness off the ball and the ball carriers making good split-second decisions.

Up next:
• Thursday, Sept. 1, 7 p.m., at Little Falls.

Panthers’ tennis team enjoying some early success

While its numbers are down and its players gaining valuable experience as they go, the GSL tennis team has enjoyed some early-season success.
The Panthers will be at Hutchinson tomorrow, Sept. 1, 4 p.m., and will head south to Mankato East Friday, Sept. 2 for an invitational beginning at 9 a.m.
The Panthers enjoyed a 5-2 win over New Prague Friday, Aug. 26. GSL’s Anna Sievert (6-4, 5-7, 6-2), Abby Ziegler (6-4, 6-7, 6-4), Alyssa Gruber (7-5, 6-2) and Abby Christensen (6-3, 6-4) won in single play. Jenna Trippel (6-4, 4-6, 2-6) forced her opponent to a decisive third set before falling.

GSL cross-country runners on a new path for success

GSL girls, boys learning to run with new leaders

A year ago, there was no doubt who the top runners the Glencoe-Silver Lake cross country teams looked to for leadership and fast times.
After seeing four girls and four boys graduate last spring, the Panthers will be working to improve both individually and as a team against the teams in the Wright County-West. Among the losses are state racers Malayh Metcalf and Connor Hathaway.

Volleyball team aiming to be among conference’s best

There’s no doubt who the Glencoe-Silver Lake Panthers expect they will have to get through to reach the top of the Wright County Conference-West’s volleyball standings.
Monday, GSL tri-captains Courtney Mathwig, Audrey Petersen and Alaina Voss agreed the biggest challenge they expect to face to reach the top of the standings this fall will come from Annandale and Watertown-Mayer. Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted is among the other teams GSL expects will offer tough challenges.

Waiving college debt – Our view: Well-intentioned plan just off target

President Joe Biden announced a plan last week to waive debt on up to $20,000 in college student debt for individual students making less than $125,000 now that they’re out in the working world. Under Biden's plan, an estimated 43 million people stand to have their loan payments reduced, while about 20 million would have their debt forgiven altogether.
Unfortunately, a small number of graduates making as much as $125,000 and couples making up to $250,000 are also eligible for some debt forgiveness.
