Larry Ostendorf, 91

Larry John Ostendorf, 91, formerly of Freeport, MN, Eagan, MN, and Glencoe, MN, passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 5, 2024.
He was born Dec. 13, 1932, in Krain Township, Stearns County, MN, and grew up in St. Francis of Assisi, St. Francis, MN, to parents Ben and Mary (Thielen) Ostendorf.
In 1953, he married Dorothy Thelen. Together, they raised six children before her passing. In 1993, he found love again and married Phyllis (Wosmek) Sopkowiak. Their union brought 30 years of companionship and adventures to Alaska, Texas, and Mexico.

Beatrice Koester, 93

Beatrice Mae Koester (Lentz), 93, of Hastings, MN, and formerly of Glencoe, MN, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024.
A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2024, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Glencoe. Rev. Jon Niebuhr will officiate.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Glencoe City Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the church.
Beatrice was born March 9, 1930, in Henry, SD. She was the daughter of Edward and Mabel (Jaehn) Lentz. She was reborn as a child of God in holy baptism. She was confirmed April 2, 1944.

Dianne Mahoney, 86

Dianne Therese Mahoney, 86, of Brooklyn Center, MN, a devout and spiritual woman, passed away peacefully in her home Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024, after a very full life.
She was reunited in heaven with her youngest daughter, Jenny Rebecca Mahoney, on the day of Jenny’s birth.
Dianne was born Nov. 7, 1937, in Estherville, IA, the daughter of Bernard Vincent Bormann and Wilma Dorothy Wobbe. Her family spent the years of WWII in Superior, WI, but eventually settled in Morris, MN.

The new state flag is scheduled to take effect on May 11.

McLeod County Board voices opposition to new Minnesota state flag

The McLeod County Board unanimously passed a resolution in opposition to the redesign of the Minnesota state flag and seal on Jan. 16.
Resolution 24-CB-12 urges the governor to reject the work of the State Emblems Redesign Commission, which submitted its final report to the governor and the Minnesota State Legislature on Dec. 29, and keep the existing state flag and seal as the official emblems of Minnesota.

McLeod County holds legislative priority workshop for the first time since pandemic

McLeod County hosted its 2024 Legislative Priority workshop on Jan. 30 at the McLeod Government Center in Glencoe.

GSL One Act Play places first in subsection competition

The Glencoe-Silver Lake High School One Act Play “Masterpiece” debuted on Jan. 25 at the school’s auditorium.
The play placed first at a subsection competition on Jan. 27 at Mayer Lutheran High School. This is the second straight year that Glencoe-Silver Lake High School has placed first in subsection competitions for the one-act play. Subsequently, Glencoe-Silver Lake was one of six schools chosen to advance to sections on Saturday in Plymouth.

Minnesota tightens right-turn-on-red law, raising safety concerns and driver confusion

Our office has received several emails about the new right-turn-on-red law that took effect on Jan. 1.
Those emails from people expressed needing clarification about what changed.
The new rule requires a complete stop before turning, even at intersections where it was previously permitted after yielding. This stricter approach, aimed at enhancing pedestrian and cyclist safety, has sparked debate and confusion among some drivers.

Area coaches and officials weigh in on the addition of the shot clock to high school basketball

The 2023-2024 high school basketball season is well underway in Minnesota and it has a new look to it. For the first time, all games this season have been played with a shot clock after several years of coaches and fans around the state calling for change.
The addition of a shot clock was approved by the Minnesota State High School back in December of 2021. When the change was adopted by the MSHSL, 75 percent of schools were in favor of adding the shot clock while 19 percent of schools around the state had already had a shot clock installed.
