Panther football drops home opener to Milaca

The home opener started off with a bang as Milaca fumbled the opening kickoff, which was recovered by GSL’s Miguel Arandia on Milaca’s own 33-yard line. The Panthers punched in the touchdown four plays later on quarterback Landon Stifter’s 15-yard touchdown run with 9:59 left to play in the first quarter. Stifter’s completed pass to Eli Ehrke converted the two-point conversion as the Panthers took an 8-0 lead.

GSL volleyball finishes the week 3-2

From the beginning of the match the GSL Panther volleyball team dominated the Sibley East Wolverines winning their seventh, eighth, and ninth sets in a row to lead off the season. The GSL student section travelled well to Arlington, giving the Panthers a raucous crowd behind them all evening long.

Late hail damage adds more challenges for farms in south central Minnesota

Farms in south central Minnesota were dealt more challenging weather in mid-August when severe storms dropped golf-ball sized hail followed by much-needed rain. While hail at any time during crop growth can be challenging, the extent of damage as well as the growth stage of crops, has implications for decision making for area farmers.

New faces at First Lutheran School

The new school year many times means new faces amongst both students and staff. First Lutheran School in Glencoe is no exception.
The school welcomed Aaliyah Bargmann, Linda Edmison, Lisa Korthals and Amy Welch.
Aaliyah Bargmann, paraprofessional, is excited to join the staff at First Lutheran. She is currently studying secondary education at Minnesota State University, Mankato and plans to continue her education at Concordia University to be able to teach in a Christian school.
She grew up attending Christian schools and is excited to share her experiences.

Coaches, athletes remember a legend

GSL coaches and athletes remember the legendary track and cross country coach that was Hank Larsen. Larsen had been coaching local athletes in some capacity for the past 56 years! Whether it was as the head track and cross country coach from 1967-1981, or taking an assist role, and more recently, rejoining the track team when the Larsen’s returned from Arizona in the early part of April, Larsen did it all.

Hotel group seeks extension

Many have wondered, “Where is the hotel?” The Glencoe City Council received an update and request on the project at last week’s city council meeting.
Glencoe Hotel Group has been working on the construction of an AmericInn hotel in Glencoe for some time.

Henry “Hank” Larsen, 83, Glencoe

Henry “Hank” M. Larsen, age 83, of Glencoe, passed away on Monday, Sept. 4, at Glencoe Regional Health Services in Glencoe.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 8, 11 a.m., at Christ Lutheran Church in Glencoe, with interment following in the Christ Lutheran Church Columbarium.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Thursday, Sept. 7, from 4-7 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Arrangements are with the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe. Online guest book is available at www.mcbridechapel.com.

Betty Mahnke, 84, Glencoe

Betty Lou Mahnke, age 84, of Glencoe, passed away on Friday, Aug. 25, at GlenFields Living With Care in Glencoe.
A funeral service was held Thursday, Aug. 31, 11 a.m., at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe with interment following at the church cemetery.
Visitation was held Thursday, Aug. 31, from 9:30 – 11 a.m., 1 ½ hours prior to the service at the church.
Pastor Daniel Welch officiated and Yvonne Schuette served as organist.
Congregational hymns were “Amazing Grace,” and “How Great Thou Art”.

Randall Just, 67, New Auburn

Randall “Randy” “Squirrel” A. Just, age 67, of New Auburn, passed away at his home Monday, Aug. 28, surrounded by his family, after a courageous 7-year battle with Leiomyosarcoma “LMS,” a rare and aggressive form of cancer at the age of 67 years.
A funeral service was held Friday, Sept. 1, 11 a.m., at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Auburn, with interment at a later date in High Island Cemetery in New Auburn.
Visitation was held Thursday, Aug. 31 from 4 to 8 p.m., at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Auburn, and continued one hour prior to the service on Friday.

David Hemerick, 78, Morgan

David Raymond Hemerick, age 78, of Morgan, formerly of Glencoe, passed away Sunday, Aug. 27, at North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8 at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church on Friday.
Interment will be in the Redwood Falls Cemetery.
