La Zacatecana finds new home on North Hennepin Avenue

Family members (from left) Anallely Vazquez, Maria Vazquez, Mauro Soto and Rosa Sota have been running the Mexican market, La Zacatecana, together on East 11th Street in Glencoe since Maria opened it in 2017. They moved the business just down the street and celebrated its grand reopening Saturday, Aug. 14.

Brownton Cubs

The 10U Brownton Cubs Orange softball team won the bronze division in its year-end tournament Saturday, July 31, in Annandale. The Cubs defeated both Maple Lake, 12-6, and Kimball Blue, 8-2, in pool play. They then faced Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted in the championship game and came out on top winning, 13-6.

Prep work

Calvin Schochenmaier, a facilities worker with the McLeod County Fair, was hard at work Monday morning, Aug. 16, moving items in preparation for visitors to the county fair this week. The McLeod County Fair opens a four-day run tomorrow, Aug. 19, at the fairgrounds in Hutchinson. The schedule of events is available online –  www.mcleodcountyfair.com/events – or in mailboxes around the fairgrounds or at the fair office.

Visiting victory lane

A pair of local drivers found their way into victory lane Saturday night at Arlington Raceway. Starting in the front row, Hannah Graf of Sumter Township won her first feature race in a sprint car. Dylan Dahlke of Brownton won the autocross feature.

Sex offender notification meeting Monday

McLeod County Sheriff's Office is hosting a community notification meeting Monday, Aug. 23, 5:30 p.m., at the McLeod County Government Center (520 Chandler Ave. N.) regarding Eric Edward Dostal, a level 3 sex offender moving to an address in Glencoe Township, rural Glencoe.
Representatives of the county sheriff's office and the Minnesota Department of Corrections will be at the meeting to provide useful information.

City council gets its first look at study

When the time comes for a developer to look at bringing commercial and/or industrial development to a future industrial park on the east side of town, the transformation will require a significant investment to reap a like reward.

Maria Vazquez has been drawn to markets almost her entire life. When she was 5 years old, she loved pretending to be a cashier, ringing up items at her home in Zacatecas, Mexico.
“This is a story she tells me,” Vazquez’s daughter, Rosa Soto, said. “She would play around with stuff like being in stores and the cashier.”

County fair returns as a four-day celebration

Organizers adding cart rides into fairgrounds

Hoping to keep more energy and enthusiasm at the fairgrounds, the McLeod County Fair is back this year after a pandemic-shuttered year. This year’s event will be a four-day event, a schedule change to minimize down time at the fair.
Monday morning, Aug. 16, crews were wrapping up preparations for displays while groundskeepers were making sure the fairgrounds in Hutchinson was spiffy.

Uncertain schedule opens door for special music at fair Sunday

Keith Tongen had always wanted to bring a gospel group to the McLeod County Fair. Thanks to some confusion surrounding the talent show, the fair’s board’s president got his wish.
Tongen and the fair board were able to bring in God’s Gospel Singers Sunday, Aug. 22, 11 a.m., at the Miller Manufacturing stage.

‘A person of interest’ – Glencoe man arrested driving murdered man’s car

A Glencoe man arrested in Worthington while driving a vehicle that reportedly belonged to a homicide victim found in his home in Plato.
Sammual Ray Levi Helms, 32, was arrested in Worthington July 30 shortly after 1 a.m. driving a vehicle police believe belong to the late Tim Tinge, a homicide victim police found in Plato. Tinge was found deceased in Plato. He died July 29 and police found him Friday, July 30 while performing a wellness check. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide but has yet to say how he died.
