Glencoe man one of many who helps people in need

Vehicles can often be seen coming and going from the McLeod Emergency Food Shelf with food pick-ups and deliveries. For some, these pick-ups are one of the biggest ways they receive food.
One of these vehicles belongs to Duane McDougall, a Glencoe man who’s been volunteering his time for the food shelf for a couple years.
“I just like to feel like I’m helping out and if there’s people who need the product, I’m glad I can help facilitate that,” McDougall said.

With over 100 cases confirmed, COVID-19 cases on the rise here

McLeod County has seen a “rapid incline” in the number of positive COVID-19 cases over the last couple of weeks, according to Interim Health and Human Service Director Meagan Mohs.
She reported to the county board Tuesday, July 7, that the county had seen an increase of 23 cases in the prior 14 days, bringing the total that day to 93, adding at that rate of increase the number would surpass 100 by the end of last week.
As of Tuesday, July 14 the county’s positive case count was at 103, with no COVID-19 related deaths.

Sonju earns solid grade from GSL School Board

After a year where the school district faced an array of financial and educational challenges the Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board gave Superintendent Chris Sonju a solid performance rating during its monthly meeting Monday.
Following a closed-door meeting with the board’s personnel committee before the July 13 monthly board business meeting, Sonju was praised for his leadership in passing an operating levy vote last November, promotion of the district and guidance through planning and implementation of distance learning.

Downtown revitalization group pitches pocket park proposal

After months of behind-the-scenes planning, discussions, calculating costs and recruiting possible funding, members of the Glencoe City Council finally got a look at a proposed downtown improvement plan.
Meeting in a workshop Monday afternoon, July 13, the council heard a proposal for a pocket park along North Hennepin Avenue adjacent to Gert & Erma Coffee Shop. The council seemed warm to the proposal. It will be formally presented for consideration at an upcoming city council meeting.

Car show offering people a chance to visit show off their sweet rides

If checking out the latest types of cars, from the classics to the more modern style, is your thing, stop by Glencoe City Center Sunday.
The show is intended as a chance for people to enjoy the scenery and have a lot of fun, said Victor Garcia, a local business owner.
“We really want to make this an annual thing,” he said.

After nearly 40 years, you’d think he would’ve learned

“You in line?” she asked.
“Nope,” I answered. “I’m just waiting for my wife. I think she’s lost.”
The woman just grinned behind her face covering. I could tell, because her eyes crinkled like she was smiling.
I happened to be in a big-box store at the time. She was the third person to ask me the same question, so I decided to move farther away from the checkout area.
Karen and I had entered the store looking for three items. We found none of them, but we did manage to lose each other.

Brownton approves Dollar General land annexation

The city of Brownton has been working on bringing a Dollar General to town for a while now, and it’s getting closer to becoming a reality.
Tuesday, July 7, the city council unanimously voted to annex two acres of land at the corner of Highway 212 and Fifth Avenue South/County Road 25 from Sumter Township for a Dollar General at its meeting.
The council’s approval doesn’t mean the land has automatically been annexed, however.
