GSL Graduation 2020

Sitting in their vehicles with family members, Stephanie Lopez Martinez and her fellow Glencoe-Silver Lake High School classmates like listened to their graduation ceremony on the radio Friday evening.

Christensen earns big honor

Glencoe-Silver Lake alum Zoe Christensen earned All-American honors in the shot put for Bemidji State University. GSL Assistant Principal Dan Svoboda congratulated the 117 seniors as they left the school parking lot after the ceremony Friday evening. GSL's Class of 2020 graduated from the parking lot on the north side of the high school.

Beau ready for next step in his fight

State band honoree

GSL French horn player Tison Werner was recently named to the state honor band, capping an rigorous audition process. Werner is one of four GSL students to earn a spot in a state honor band since 2016-17.

After 31 years, Schiller says farewell

Delta Fabricating president Mike Schiller retired after 31 years with the company Friday, May 29. Delta owner Dave Fox wished Schiller well at an informal gathering at the Glencoe plant.

County nixes solar project on split vote

The McLeod County Board voted 3-2 against the recommendation of the county’s planning advisory commission’s recommendation to approve a conditional-use permit (CUP) application by US Solar Corporation for a .5-megawatt community solar garden on a property owned by Donald Mielke in Hale Township.
Commissioners Joe Nagel, Ron Shimanski and Doug Krueger voted against the project.
The CUP application was originally heard at the Jan. 22 planning advisory commission meeting where it was tabled until Feb. 26 with a request for more information.

City council OKs improvements for muni airport

If the funding from the Federal Aviation Administration comes through, the city is planning to enact a significant pavement improvement project at the Glencoe Municipal Airport.
Monday, June 1, a divided city council approved bids for a $908,985 airport hangar area rehabilitation and taxilane improvement. Councilors Cory Neid and Allen Robeck voted against accepting the bids. Minger Construction of Jordan submitted the low bid. The bid is contingent upon FAA funding, which is dependent upon a ruling on the airport’s approach and departure zones.

Beau ready for next step in his fight

For months, Brenda and Dave Brelje were trying to find out what was causing their young son’s debilitating headaches.
When a doctor told the couple their son Beau has a mass growing on his brain, the news knocked Brenda off her feet. Now, months later, Beau is preparing for the next round in his fight with ependymoma, a cancerous tumor that grows on the brain or spine. He’ll start a series of chemotherapy treatments June 22 at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis. The treatment will include a spinal tap and MRI.

Planning commission advances gravel mine projects, events center

With the backing of the county planning commission, the McLeod County Board will consider approval of a pair of mining operations and an events center in the Glencoe area.
Wednesday morning, the commission unanimously OK’d the three applications after separate public hearings on conditional-use permits. The county board is expected to consider the proposals on its consent agenda on the June 16 county board meeting consent agenda.
