GSL to hold drive-thru graduation, OKs grading modification while students learn from a distance

The class of 2020 will have stories to tell for years to come. Their commencement ceremony will be one for the history books.
Glencoe-Silver Lake Principal Matt Foss told the school board of plans for a drive-thru ceremony to be held Friday, May 29 at 7:30 p.m. at its regular meeting Monday, May 18. Information about the ceremony was sent to the graduates and students on Tuesday.
The ceremony will be held in the northeast student parking lot. Each student will be assigned a parking spot and allowed one vehicle per student.

McLeod County Planning Commission sends solar garden to county board

A proposal to bring a solar garden to Hale Township has seemingly cleared a hurdle and is on its way to the McLeod County Board with the endorsement of the county’s planning commission.
The commission unanimously endorsed at its May 14 meeting a proposal for a conditional-use permit allowing United States Solar Corp. to lease 10 acres of a 49.49-acre parcel from landowner Donald Mielke and allow US Solar to build a half-megawatt solar garden on property along Falcon Avenue south of Highway 7 and east of Silver Lake. The McLeod County Board will take up the proposal at its June 2 meeting.

A ‘news desert’ threatens our communities, republic

Buried in the blizzard of COVID-19 information in major newspapers and over the state and national airwaves was an article that has major implications for Americans — the erosion of a foundational block of this country, the First Amendment. In particular, freedom of the press. The problem is most Americans really don’t care, let alone notice.
An article in the StarTribune May 14 was on the bottom of page one of the B Section (the state news page). It was titled “Weekly newspapers statewide felled by the pandemic.”

Stewart council rejects mail-in ballots for 2020 election

The Stewart City Council approved in-person voting for the two remaining 2020 elections at its meeting May 11.
Any city with fewer than 400 registered voters is eligible to request a mail-in ballot election.
The cities of Biscay and Plato as well as many townships in McLeod County will be using mail-in ballots this fall.

Glencoe’s Petersen honored for work on field, in the classroom at MSU

Minnesota State, Mankato baseball senior infielder Teddy Petersen has been named CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 First Team for his work on the field and in the classroom this past season.
The Glencoe native saw action in 12 games in the shortened 2020 season for the Mavericks and was named to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference spring all-academic team for the third consecutive year.

Let’s play ball – Amateur baseball teams holding out hope for 2020 season

Unlike high school baseball and American Legion baseball, town ball leaders are holding out hopes for a 2020 season despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The Minnesota Amateur Baseball Association, the state-level governing board of the Glencoe Brewers, the Brownton Bruins and Plato Blue Jays, is operating as if the state and the Minnesota Baseball Association will allow them to play ball this summer, perhaps as soon as early-June. Their hope is town ball teams across the state will be allowed to take the field in some form of modified schedule.

Memorial Day – Legion, VFW to honor their comrades

Memorial Day this year will be unlike one most anyone has experienced, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The annual remembrance and honoring of those who gave their lives in service to their country and those who have passed away since will be held in different forms this year.
Members of the Glencoe VFW will hold a virtual Memorial Day ceremony Monday, May 25, 1 p.m. It will be held on YouTube and Facebook Live and be accessible via a link on the Glencoe VFW’s Facebook page.

Letter – Thank Dictator Walz for our ‘Funless Summer’

To the editor,
Do you remember 1974? It was the year the Beach Boys released the album, “Endless Summer.” It was a great album with a lot of hit songs.
Well this year, thanks to our dictator governor, 2020 will be remembered as “Funless Summer.” It makes me sad and incredibly mad as well. I cannot believe all the hysteria and panic that people are showing over the COVID-19 virus. Events of all types are being postponed or canceled altogether throughout the summer (June-August).
And this is only May 14; really?

Letter – Rep. Collin Peterson was too late to take credit

To the editor,
Shame on you Collin Peterson, I heard your campaign ad bragging how you were able to get the meat packing plant in Worthington to use better techniques for processing meat, with hand-washing, masks, etc.

Letter – Oppose ‘Gov. Pharoah’s’ shutdown, DFL agenda

To the editor,
I am even more concerned about the shutdown then I was a month ago. When will it end? I feel Gov. Walz is devastating our economy. Thousands of Minnesota businesses have or will be closing due to the shutdown, which is not substantiated by the number of COVID-19 cases or deaths.
