County board awards Morningside Drive bid

It was starting to seem like a day that would never come, the McLeod County Board voted unanimously to award the bid on the Morningside Drive project in Glencoe to Duininck, Inc. in Prinsburg.
The company submitted the low bid of $5,025,687.09. The low bid was 23 percent over the engineers estimate of $4,085,162.70.
County Engineer John Brunkhorst informed the county that most urban projects have been coming in well over the original estimates based on increased labor and material costs.

McLeod Emergency Food Shelf awaiting surge

There’s a big surge in the number of area residents the staff at the McLeod Emergency Food Shelf expects will need help sooner or later. Just when is still to be determined.
Lennie Albers, the food shelf’s executive director, and the team of staff and volunteers wish they knew exactly when the anticipated surge would arrive. They want to be ready.
With all but exempt workers expected to be staying at home in Minnesota, Albers figures the demand will increase.
“I have no idea how to predict this thing,” she said. “I’m not sure what percentage of workers are essential.”

We should all miss a lawmaker like Sen. Steve Dille

It was with great sadness I read about the death of retired state Sen. Steve Dille, R-Dassel, on March 25. He was 75.
Sen. Dille was one of few politicians I had utmost respect for in my 40-plus years in the newspaper business.
His death leaves another void in the political middle. Not many of the old politicians are left who could actually get things accomplished despite ideological differences.

Silver Lake councilors gets sticker shock on estimated project costs

In the ever-changing world these days, public bodies are learning new ways to hold public meetings to keep citizens healthy and safe. The Silver Lake City Council is no different.
The council closed its regular meeting Monday, April 6, to the public and gave members of the public the option to listen remotely. Citizens could submit any items for the public comment before the meeting.

Johnson starts non-profit to relieve isolation from COVID-19

NorthStar Neighbor, a new nonprofit organization, was launched this week to match volunteers with seniors or those at high risk of COVID-19 who need remote companionship and conversation and help with delivery of food or prescriptions.

Two GSL basketball players earn post-season honors

They started the basketball season hoping to help their respective teams while improving their individual skills. Mission accomplished.
Radio stations KDUZ/KARP/KGLB recognized Glencoe-Silver Lake basketball players Miah Monahan and Mitchel Jaskowiak as members of the all-area basketball teams. The honor comes after both players were named all-Wright County Conference teams.

Like his teammates, GSL’s Hedtke hoping for any portion of spring season

He started the season hoping to add a little pop on his fastball, a little movement on a changeup. Now, the Glencoe-Silver Lake High School junior is just hoping for a chance to play a meaningful game.
Hedtke is one of dozens of GSL student- athletes hoping the spring season is not lost to the coronavirus pandemic. He knows time is winding down, that the deadline for even an abbreviated schedule is closing in on school activities directors like GSL’s Dean Schwirtz, who also serves as the school’s baseball coach.

Glencoe barber wants to go back to work soon

Sitting in a barber’s chair, Dave Exsted was concerned about the impact the coronavirus would have on his business in downtown Glencoe. His worry isn’t getting any easier to take.
Exsted owns the Stylists for Men and Women on East 10th Street. He is one of the many businesspeople in the state who doesn’t have the luxury of being deemed essential under Gov. Tim Walz’s executive order that people should stay at home to help prevent the COVID-19 virus from spreading. He understands the rationale of the governor’s order and won’t argue with it. It’s the impact of the order he’s worried about.

COVID-19 pandemic helping fuel Glencoe’s municipal liquor store sales

While several Glencoe businesses have been ordered closed and their owners feeling the pinch during the COVID-19 pandemic, Glencoe’s municipal liquor store is enjoying a solid sales month.
The third full week of March, 15-21, was the best sales week the store has ever had, said Jon VanDamme, manager of Glencoe Wine & Sprits, the municipal liquor store. Friday, March 21, was the biggest day in sales the store has enjoyed since it began selling liquor off-sale only in 1987.

Letter to editor: If domestic abuse is an issue, help is readily available

To the editor,
Home is not a safe place for everyone. Covid-19, social isolation, and the stay-at- home order do not cause people to abuse, but can escalate an already abusive situation.
Social distancing can increase the severity of domestic violence by limiting access to social supports and resources. Friends, family, and coworkers play a vital safety role in this situation and we can offer support. If you think someone you know is in an abusive relationship, reach out to our crisis hotline.
