Track work

A crew from Twin Cities and Western Railroad installed new track along a curved section of rail line just east of North Hennepin Avenue in downtown Glencoe last week. The section of curved track is several decades old and needs replacement because of the pressure on the track from the train as it turns, said Mark Wegner, president of Twin Cities and Western Railroad. Despite the work, there were no delays to trains using the line, he said.

Club’s new GM sees potential to grow game business

Glencoe Country Club’s new general manager, Troy Kohls, didn’t play golf in high school. He was a member of the Chaska High School baseball team. Kohls is interested in the business side of golf. He wants to make the club a more inviting place for players, especially young golfers. The club is planning a special this season to attract junior golfers.

GSL begins learning from afar

Matt Foss, Glencoe-Silver Lake Junior-Senior High School principal, helped freshman Lyla Salinas prepare for lessons she’ll receive and submit online. With the state ordering school closed because of the COVID-19 virus, GSL students began distance learning Monday.

Good clean – and yes, competitive – fun

The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church kickball team won the Concordia tournament in St. Paul last month for the third consecutive year (2018, ‘19 and ‘20). The team stresses good sportsmanship, participation and being competitive. Team members the last three years still in high school include Mackenzie Kantack, Rachael Meyer, Grace Kohnen, Carter Ziegler, Zach Voelz, Paul Sievert, Taygen Koch, Andrew Kettner, Damien Silus, Emma Gepson, Cloe Kuehl, Gabe Hussong, Paige Drew, Malayna Graf and Hannah Graf.

Special delivery

Glencoe firefighters (from left) Erik Paggen, Collin Gustafson, Mark Cornell and Karen Pagel, a resident at Millie Beneke Manor, delivered delievered meals on wheels Monday morning. Firefighters, Trailblazer Transit drivers and other volunteers have stepped forward to deliver meals while many of the regular drivers are sidelined by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A very cautious building demolition

A crew from Don Rettman Construction of Litchfield carefully razed the building at 1128 Hennepin Ave. N. this week. The crew started demolition work inside the building last week and then began exterior work, from the alley toward North Hennepin Avenue. Their work was slow and cautious because of the two commercial buildings on the north and south sides of the building. The city obtained the building after it went into forfeiture and was deemed a safety hazard. The city has plans to redevelop the site.
