Women building a home

Celebrating women working in construction, a group of volunteers spent Friday and Saturday working on the interior of a Habitat for Humanity house on North Baldwin Avenue in Glencoe. The group of volunteers worked on flooring and trim boards. The home’s owners-to-be, Theresa Rannow and Trinity Johnson, and their children expect to be moving into the house later this spring. The volunteers Friday included (from left) Megan Jordan, Patty Lombardo, Amber Kauffman, Tami McGruder, Taylor Weichert, Sally Custer, Deb Rueb, Lorri Mittelksteadt and Chris Davis.

His own protest

Larry Johnson, of Phoenix, Ariz., and a landowner in Stewart, is in the midst of a 25-day hunger strike to protest what he claims is harassment from area law enforcement. Johnson was cited three times for moving violations in a 90-minute span in Brownton Oct. 2, 2018, and in April of 2019 for not wearing a seat belt or changing the address on his license. He’s also had his license suspended. Johnson, an HVAC contractor, is parked in the courthouse parking lot, accompanied only by his support pig, “Adam,” a Juliana pig. Johnson is consuming only water but is feeding the miniature pig.

Panthers have new softball coach

Taylor Jones is the new varsity softball coach at GSL.

There's order in this court

The GSL mock trial team finished its season last month. A judge awards points to the prosecuting and defence. Students testifying are questioned and cross examined before verdict on the winner is rendered. Coach Brook Magnuson said the group worked well together and improved steadily throughout the season, especially on its cross-examinations of witnesses.

A wonderful weather Sunday

With temperatures just reaching 60 degrees and a mild breeze blowing through from the south Sunday, it was a great afternoon for a bike ride around Glencoe, visiting city and school district parks and playgrounds to enjoy an unseasonably warm afternoon. Ashley Cohrs and her son, Grayson, played at the playground adjacent to the GSL Early Childhood Family Education facility.

Hubmen too much for GSL in second half

Anybody expecting the Glencoe-Silver Lake High School boys’ hoops team to quietly fall by the wayside in its sub-section semifinal game against Jordan Thursday, March 5, was woefully mistaken.

Panthers have new softball coach

While coaches this time of year oftentimes glance out the window wondering how long until their athletes can head outside to practice, Taylor Jones is understandably anxious for the snow to melt and fields to be ready for play.
Jones is Glencoe-Silver Lake’s new varsity softball coach.
Monday, March 9, was the official start of the softball season. Jones was one of two internal candidates to replace Steve Davis, who resigned Jan. 27. Jones takes over a program with plenty of experience but a little bit short on senior leadership.

City lays out police chief succession plan

With no apparent objections from its assembled members, the city council had its first look at plans for Glencoe’s next police chief Monday afternoon.
Chief Jim Raiter has announced plans to retire Nov. 1. The city charter allows Mayor Randy Wilson to appoint Raiter’s successor. Wilson has the new police chief ready to go.

City ready to seek a consultant for comprehensive plan

Having set aside money for the initial phase of work, the Glencoe City Council is apparently ready to begin the process of formulating a comprehensive plan.
The city’s approach is to work on the study incrementally. The council’s approved 2020 budget includes $36,000 for the initial portion of a phased approach. The city estimates it will spend about $100,000 on the plan over two years, said City Administrator Mark Larson. The requests for proposals (RFP) will help the city determine how much it can get for its money over time, he said.

For Neumann, Glencoe feels almost like home

She has a blend of desire to work in local government serving citizens and wanting to be in a small community where neighbors take the time to get to know each other.
Lynn Neumann is comfortable working in Glencoe.
Neumann recently started her new position for the city as its assistant administrator. She’ll work coordinating events at Glencoe City Center and around the community, promote the community for economic development and develop the city’s electronic presence via social media. Neumann was recently introduced to the city council at its March 2 meeting.
