Panthers boys’ hoops wins tourney game

They had planned to get a little more work in during the holiday break. But when Eden Valley-Watkins called GSL Saturday, Dec. 28, and said the rain and accumulating ice made travel conditions too dangerous, there was no reason to do anything but cancel the remaining games of the Panthers’ annual holiday basketball tournament.
GSL was expecting to play Eden Valley-Watkins for the tournament championship Saturday evening. The Eagles had dispatched Hill-Murray, 65-35, in the tournament opener Friday.

Miller remembered as civic-minded man with a plan

He spent a warm September Saturday morning working on a crosswalk-painting project. It was the same crosswalk where he’d been photographed as a young boy years before.
Much had changed in the 50-plus years between those two days. Yet Craig Miller was again in downtown Glencoe, and this time he was giving his time to make it a better place a little bit at a time.
Miller, 62, is remembered this week. He passed away Sunday, Dec. 22, almost three months to the day after suffering a devastating stroke.

GSL wants to improve its vo-tech offerings

Through seemingly no fault of his own, Mid-Minnesota Builders' co-owner Kenny Grimm hopes the telephone will ring with an applicant willing to work in the construction industry. He’s been waiting too long for his liking.
Employers like Grimm and Adam Revier of Revier Welding of Glencoe need employees to enter the trades and take skilled jobs that will allow their companies to meet the demands of customers and grow. But without enough employees to fill open spots, the companies are unable to grow.

Like him or not – Our view: Rep. Peterson voted his conscience

Last week, we read U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson voted against approving the articles of impeachment involving President Donald Trump’s alleged abuse of presidential power by using the presidential power to supposedly coerce Ukraine into investigating a political rival of the president’s and then obstruct a Congressional inquiry into whether President Trump committed impeachable acts.

Are we keeping our American democracy healthy?

By Lee H. Hamilton
Representative democracy is based on a simple premise. It’s that ordinary citizens can make satisfactory judgments on complex public policy and political issues — or at least grasp them well enough to decide who should be dealing with them.
But the significance of that premise isn’t simple at all. It means that our country’s future depends on the quality of democratic participation by its citizens. Collectively, we have to make discriminating judgments about politicians, policies, and issues. Not just once, but repeatedly and consistently.
