Saints take meet from Panthers’ gymnasts in season opener

The Panthers’ gymnasts fell in their first meet of the season against St. Peter Tuesday, Dec. 3, by a score of 128.625 to 120.075. The meet was at Gustavus Adolphus College.
A difference of just eight points isn’t a significant swing in favor of the Saints, but a talented and experienced St. Peter group, headed by the same coach that mentored GSL Head Coach Kim Hahn in high school, ended up being too much for the Panthers.

Saints march past Panthers in girls’ basketball season debut

The Panthers’ girls basketball team dropped its first game against St. Peter Tuesday, Dec. 3, but head coach Jeff Monahan wasn’t losing any sleep over the loss.
Monahan didn’t show much displeasure with an 0-1 record, firstly, because it was the Panthers’ first game of the season. First-game nerves, kinks and excitement can get in the way of a game running smoothly. It’s difficult to replicate a game atmosphere in practice, Monahan said.

Panthers’ wrestlers off to solid start on the mat in early going

The early returns have the Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team showing the need for more experience and solid potential heading into the season.
The Panthers fell in their opening match, a tough loss to rival Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Dec. 3. GSL/Lester Prairie earned a solid fourth-place finish Saturday at the Don Hall Invitational tournament at GSL.
The Panthers will be at Mound Westonka tomorrow, Dec. 12, 5 p.m., for a four-team meet featuring Rockford, Benilde-St. Margaret’s and Mound-Westonka. They will be in Chanhassen Saturday, Dec. 14, 9 a.m., for a tournament.

GSL boys’ hoops team falls in season’s opener

Finally enjoying the chance to compete against someone besides their own teammates, the GSL boys’ basketball team fell in its first game of the new campaign last Tuesday against St. Peter.
The Panthers dropped the Dec. 3 non-conference game, 79-65. They were back on the road last night at Holy Family after this edition of The Chronicle went to press. GSL will welcome Hutchinson to town Friday, Dec. 13, at 5:45 p.m., and will host Sibley East Saturday, Dec. 14, 3:15 p.m.

Mayor vetoes resolution on board membership

A week after he criticized a proposed resolution the city council passed on a 3-2 vote the previous week, Glencoe Mayor Randy Wilson informed councilors Monday, Dec. 9, he planned to veto the proposal.
Wilson presented his rationale to the council at the end of Monday’s workshop, Dec. 9. The council did not discuss the mayor’s decision during the workshop yet he and Councilor Cory Neid discussed it after the workshop adjourned while councilors Allen Robeck and Paul Lemke stood close by listening.

County shows where the money goes

McLeod County’s 2020 operating budget includes an 8.9 percent increase in the property tax levy.
The proposed levy increase was part of a report McLeod County Auditor-Treasurer Connie Kurtzweg and Colleen Robeck, the county’s finance director, presented information detailing how McLeod County’s tax dollars are utilized and how citizens are impacted at a truth-in-taxation hearing last Tuesday evening, Dec. 3.
Robeck compiled a packet detailing the county’s 2020 budget, and Kurtzweg did the same with a packet where she laid out how residents are taxed and for which purposes.

Not the park board’s first choice, Eiden still wants to serve

Even though the chairman of the Glencoe Park Board made it clear Jim Eiden was not the board’s preferred candidate to fill a vacancy, Eiden still wants to serve the community on the advisory board.
Eiden decided he’d accept the five-year appointment Thursday morning, Dec. 5, after a telephone call with Park Board Chairman Mike Long.
“If you’d have asked me that half an hour ago, I’d have said ‘no’,” Eiden said.
Eiden watched a replay of the Dec. 2 meeting online and heard Long tell the city council Kevin Dietz was the park board’s preferred candidate to fill a vacancy on the board.

GSL School Board OKs 17.31 percent levy increase

Taxpayers in the Glencoe-Silver Lake school district will see an increase on their tax statement next year.
The GSL School Board approved a 17.31 percent levy increase at its regular meeting Monday, Dec. 9. The $4,314,557.08 levy, a $636,656.85 increase from 2019, will be payable by taxpayers in 2020 and received by the district for the 2020-2021 school year.
The school district held its annual truth-in-taxation hearing before the meeting Monday. Michelle Sander, the district’s business manager, presented the levy information to those in attendance.

Winsted man among soldiers killed in crash

A Winsted man serving in the Minnesota Army National Guard was one of the three guardsmen killed when a helicopter crashed Thursday afternoon, Dec. 5, southwest of St. Cloud.
