Silver Lake Police chief resigns, ambulance struggles for new recruits

Silver Lake Police Chief Robert “RJ” Cripps submitted his resignation last week, effective Dec. 11. He gave a 30-day notice to help with a smooth transition to a new leader.
In a letter to Mayor Dorothy Butler and the city council, Cripps said “I take great pride in the overwhelming support that the citizens of Silver Lake have given the Police Department and I over the past almost six years.”

Former SLFD assistant chief honored posthumously

The Jurek children recall their father frequently leaving the house or family gatherings abruptly when a fire call came in. A quick departure meant somebody needed help and their father, James Jurek, and the rest of the department would answer the call.
Last month, when the members of the Minnesota Fire Chiefs Association gathered for their annual convention, James “Jimmy” Jurek was honored for years of service to the department and his community. Jurek served as a member of the Silver Lake Fire Department for 37 years, 15 as its assistant chief.

He knew the difference between reality and ‘fake news’

The first time I went to take a photo of the Glencoe graduating Class of 1940, lined up along the far wall were a bevy of wheeled walkers. Lining up the class for a photo might take awhile, I thought.
There among the elderly group was a tall, ramrod-straight fellow who stood head and shoulders above everyone else. The man turned out to be Merrill Burgstahler. The naturally curious thing to do as a journalist was to go over and talk with him. That was in 2009.

Kudos to the chamber – Our view: It makes Glencoe a better community

No matter how tasty the hot beef commercial might be, chamber of commerce meetings are not traditionally known as must-attend entertainment. There are times they can be painfully dull. Thank goodness for the dedicated group of businesspersons who keep them running.
Last Wednesday, Nov. 13, the Glencoe Area Chamber of Commerce honored business people who are getting involved in making the community a better place. They are giving valuable time toward improving downtown and dedicating valuable resources to bring new businesses to the city.
