Bill takes aim at thwarting ‘robocalls’

GOP’s Hughes will make third try to win Peterson’s seat in Congress

Dave Hughes recently announced he is again a Republican candidate for U.S. House of Representatives to serve the people of Minnesota's 7th Congressional District.
“Congress is failing our nation with irresponsible overspending that saddles the American people with a crushing national debt that threatens the American dream for our children and generations to come. We need more battle-tested veterans and principled leaders to take power back from the federal government and return it to the people," said Hughes, a retired major in the U.S. Air Force.

Christ Lutheran bringing ‘Laundry Love’ to Glencoe

An idea spawned over coffee two years ago figures to help area residents who need a little assistance with some of everyday life’s most basic needs.
Two Glencoe women have helped bring an idea started in California to Glencoe. With the support of their church, Christ Lutheran, and the community’s laundromat, the Laundry Love program provides people in need another tool to help improve their everyday lives.

Raymond Gruenwalt, 77, of Gaylord

Raymond “Ray” Gruenwalt, 77, of Gaylord passed away Sunday, Aug. 4, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
A funeral service was held Friday, Aug. 9, 11 a.m., at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Auburn with interment in High Island Cemetery in New Auburn.
Pastor Dawn Quame was the officiating clergy.
Kara Scholla was the organist. Soloist Darwin Frauendienst sang “The Lord’s Prayer.”
“Why Me Lord,” “How Great Thou Art” and “The Old Rugged Cross” were the congregational hymns.

Loren Oelfke, 76, of Arlington

Loren Leonard Oelfke, 76, of Arlington, formerly of Hamburg, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Good Samaritan Society in Arlington.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 12, 11 a.m., at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg, with interment in the church cemetery.
Pastor Mark Triplett was the officiating clergy.
Kathy Oelfke was the organist.
“Lift High The Cross,” “How Great Thou Art,” “I Am Trusting Thee Lord Jesus,” and “My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less” were the congregational hymns.

Brownton to assess property owners $1.5 million for streets project

While approving pay application number 10 for $451,924.27, the Brownton City Council discussed its assessment policy with Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH) engineers John Rodeberg and Chris Knutson. Total assessment to benefitting properties for the street improvement project is $1,500,611.25. The city’s portion is $4,485,320.78.
The pay application was paid to R&R Excavating, the general contractor for the project that started in 2016 and will see a completion date in 2020. The project was supposed to be done in 2018 according to Brownton city officials.

Stewart approves preliminary budget with $11,813 shortfall

The Stewart City Council nearly balanced its preliminary budget for 2020 at a meeting Monday, Aug. 12. The council cut more than $50,000 from the city’s budget in one night, taking mostly from the city’s maintenance department. Mayor Jason Peirce said the city’s total expenditure is budgeted for $812,685, leaving a shortfall of $11,813.

Leaving his mark on the shores of Lake Huron

It’s called a vacation from retirement. You know, the time away from the routine of being retired. Hey, retirement can be pretty hectic.
We recently returned from ours, refreshed and ready to re-enter retirement.
Karen and I, along with her sister, brother and his wife, packed into one vehicle to travel nearly a thousand miles to Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island in Michigan for a five-day adventure.
Thankfully, we all get along and were still talking to each other when it was over. Not all families can say that. Such a trip is not recommended for a feuding family.

Charter change — Our view: GFD’s request should be unanimously approved

Years ago, fire departments routinely selected their members and leaders via election. It was, at the time, the accepted modus operandi.
Times change.
Earlier this year, the leadership of the Glencoe Fire Department approached the city and asked about changing the way the department formally selects its members and its leaders.
