Bruins head to playoffs on four-game skid

It wasn’t quite the end to the regular season that the Brownton Bruins had hoped for, as the team dropped its final two Crow River Valley League games last week to head into the Region 7C playoffs with an 11-7 circuit record.
Brownton suffered a 6-3 loss at Young America Wednesday, July 17. The hosts held a 1-0 lead until the eighth inning, when Deryk Randt smashed a three-run homer to plate Ryan Grams and Dylan Maiers and give the Bruins a 3-1 advantage.
The lead barely lasted, however, as the Cardinals seized control of the contest with five runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board members took the first formal steps Monday morning in deciding if they will ask voters to approve an extension of the district’s operating levy and how big a property tax increase, if any, they will ask voters to accept.
Directors are expected to decide at their Aug. 12 school board meeting how they want to proceed. If they vote to hold an operating levy referendum, the single-voting-site election will be conducted Nov. 5 at Glencoe City Center.

County, city forced to delay Morningside project until 2020

Work to extend Morningside Drive north through the railroad crossing to County Road 15 have been shelved until next year, McLeod County announced last week.
The project is intended to move traffic to Highway 212 more efficiently and away from a school/residential neighborhood. It will open a crossing of the railroad tracks at Morningside Drive and create a link to County Road 15 at a roundabout. In exchange for the opening at Morningside, the city has agreed to close the existing railroad crossing at Union Avenue.

Glencoe City Council talks street maintenance plan

Road maintenance is an ongoing battle for any city and Monday afternoon, the Glencoe City Council discussed the best options for future maintenance of its 22 miles of streets during a workshop.
City Engineer Justin Black from Short Elliott and Hendrickson Inc. explained different types of street maintenance and the associated costs.
The easiest and most cost effective is a chip seal coat. This process works well for streets that don’t have a lot of cracks and simply needs a protective seal.

Henry Hill School bell awaits its return

A piece of the community’s history quietly sits in the basement of Glencoe City Center waiting for its time to be returned to public view.
A bell that called students to school from its mounted position over Henry Hill School has spent years in the basement, said Gloria Hilgers of the Glencoe Historical Preservation Society (GHPS). The society is in the early stages of planning how it wants to display the historic cast-iron bell and fundraising for the display.
