Track and field teams compete at Invite

In preparation for the sectional True Team meet that was held on Tuesday, May 5, the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ and girls’ track and field teams had a light stretch of competition with just one meet last week.
Both Panthers’ teams took part in the Connie Manuel Invitational at Mound Westonka High School on Thursday, April 30. The GSL boys took third with 88 points, while the girls placed fifth with 36.3.

Brewers hold on to top Black Sox

The Glencoe Brewers earned their first win in Crow River Valley league play by means of a 7-6 defeat of the visiting Carver Black Sox on Sunday, May 3.  Glencoe surged to a 6-0 lead by the bottom of the fourth inning before hanging on against a late Carver comeback.
“Held on for a good win,” Brewers manager Stephen Wiblemo said.

Bruins defeat Mayer, keep spotless record

The Brownton Bruins are still undefeated at 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Crow River Valley League after an 8-5 win over the Mayer Blazers Sunday afternoon.
The Bruins’ victory didn’t come without a battle from the Blazers, though, as Brownton saw an early 3-0 lead get tied up in the bottom of the third by Mayer.

Sunny run sheds light on mental health awareness

Nearly 400 runners and walkers took to the streets of Glencoe on Saturday, May 2 for the inaugural Break the Stigma 5K run/3K walk. 
The event navigated a course around the northwest part of town both beginning and ending at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on a sunny morning that matched the mood of its participants.

More Panthers than ever are taking a shot at trap

It’s been a great spring so far for the Glencoe-Silver Lake trapshooting team. Numbers are up, both score-wise and as far as participation, and coach Doug Fegley could not be happier. 
“We’re really getting things on track,” he said. “Things are going real well.”
The Panthers are in the midst of their 2015 season. The squad competes at the Winthrop Game Protective League, and the clubhouse is fuller than ever this season.

3 injured in two-car crash

Three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Garden Avenue and 120th Street, just north of Glencoe, at about 7:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Daniel Jay Rickert, 61, of Hutchinson

Daniel Jay Rickert, 61, of Hutchinson, died Saturday, April 18, 2015, at his home.
Memorial services were held Monday, April 27, at Peace Lutheran Church in Hutchinson with the Rev. John Pasche officiating. Ashley Rettig offered the eulogy. The organist was Dr. Joan DeVeen Dixon. Soloist Jim Wendling sang “The Lord’s Prayer.” Congregational hymns were “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “On Eagle’s Wings.”
Jay Rickert was the urn bearer. Honorary urn bearers were Jody Guennigsmann, Jill Jaskowiak and Jason Quast.

Esther V. Ziemann, 99, of Hutchinson

Esther V. Ziemann, 99, of Hutchinson, formerly of Stewart, died Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, April 28, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mahlon Bekedam officiating. Adline Kottke was the organist. Randy and Mary Zieman sang “Lass Mich Gehen!” and “Supper Time.”
Honorary casket bearers were Duane Kottke, Lloyd Dettman and Melvin Dettman. Casket bearers were Randy Buboltz, Gary Dettman, Don Kottke, Kevin Ziemann, Ryan Kotnik and Logan Meurer.

Myron Henry Seller, 77 of Glencoe

Myron Henry Seller, 77, of Glencoe, formerly of Hassan Valley Township, rural Hutchinson, died Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.
A memorial service was held Friday, April 17, at Peace Lutheran Church in Hutchinson with the Rev. Gerhard Bode officiating. Dr. Joan DeVee Dixon was the organist. Soloist Jim Wendling sang “On Eagle’s Wings.” Congregational hymns were “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art” and “In the Garden.”
