Redskins nickname: tradition or racial slur?

For several weeks before Sunday’s Vikings-Redskins’ game, The Chronicle received e-mails from organizations touting their plans to rally in the Twin Cities to protest the use of “Redskins” as a team name.
Our gut reaction was that this was another attempt at making society overly “politically correct,” or “PC” as the abbreviation goes, to cater to the hypersensitivity of special interest groups.

An American icon beheaded — by me

Whatever I may accomplish in my career with McLeod Publishing, I suspect my co-workers will always remember me as the person who beheaded an American icon.
We have two candy machines on our front counter. The candy is supposed to be for any child who comes in while mom or dad is renewing their subscription or placing an ad, but the reality is that the employees are constantly hovering around them.
One machine is a giant bubble with a motion-activated sensor. Wave your hand under the spout and candy will plop into it.

Thank our veterans on Nov. 11

To the Editor:
The members of the American Legion Auxiliary Silver Lake Unit 141 would like to express sincere appreciation for the men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces.
Thank you for serving this great country. Thank you for protecting us. Thank you for the security we have and feel here at home.
We know you sacrificed much for your country and all of us.
And though you may no longer wear a uniform, we know you’re always on call to serve and protect the freedom and security of the United States of America.

Goal for Nov. 19 Glencoe blood drive: 124 units

To the Editor:
We are at two weeks and counting down!
The Glencoe Community Blood Drive is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 1 to 7 p.m., at the Glencoe City Center ballroom.
This is our third and last blood drive of 2014 and the American Red Cross has set our goal at 124 units. We fell slightly short of our goal at our July blood drive; we hope to make and even surpass the goal set for us this time.
The need for blood and platelets is constant and your contribution is important for a healthy and reliable blood supply.
