Silver Lake City Council revokes multi-housing certificate at The Villager

The Silver Lake City Council held a heated special meeting Monday, May 6, to review and address the status of the multi-unit housing certificate at 104 S. Grove Ave.
The city continues to deal with allegations of criminal activity at the building. The city says the owner has not fully complied with the city’s multi-housing unit ordinance since it was adopted in January of 2017.
The council voted unanimously Monday to revoke the multi-housing certificate for the property and gave owner Mike Jaunich until May 15 to vacate those living there. The building will be posted as uninhabitable.

She’s beaten cancer, enjoys bowling, an occasional visit to a casino, good chocolate, playing cards and visits to the hairdresser. Elizabeth Howe figures life is for the living.
The longtime Glencoe resident celebrated her 103rd birthday last Friday. She lives at GlenFields Living with Care in Glencoe and was honored the day before at GlenFields’ chapel dedication. Members of her family, including daughters, granddaughters, niece and great-grandchildren were on hand to wish Elizabeth a happy birthday.

City wants house on Sunrise Drive off blocks, on a foundation

For several months, the white farmhouse on the south end of Sunrise Drive has sat on blocks waiting to be placed on a foundation.
And waiting.
Now, the City of Glencoe is done waiting. Tomorrow night, May 9, 7 p.m., the planning commission intends to address the permits the city issued to Erik Duvall of Erik Duvall Construction in March. The commission will hold a public hearing on its plans to revoke both the special-use permit and building permit it issued Duvall last year.

Achievement gap: Some GSL students doing better than counterparts statewide

The spotlight on the achievement gap of results from state math, science and reading comprehensive exams and graduation rates shows a gap between minorities and students receiving free-and-reduced meal service is narrower at Glencoe-Silver Lake students than their counterparts statewide.

Former Shopko staff says goodbye to friends and customers

With Shopko’s closing May 5, all 19 of its former employees, seven of which were full-timers, lost their jobs. What hasn’t been lost on the employees is the relationships they’ve cultivated along the way.
When Shopko’s corporate office first announced store closures, the list didn’t include the Glencoe location. Employees breathed a sigh of relief as they rejoiced in job security — until just a few weeks later when, on Feb. 8, the corporate chain announced additional closings that included Glencoe’s “Hometown” store.

Prepare for the future - Our view: It’s good to see young people involved

The Glencoe Downtown Revitalization Committee held its first meeting last week. It was an organizational get-together, a chance for participants to match names and faces and people offer a preliminary idea of why they are participating in the process. The good news is that among the attendees were a half-dozen high school students, young people showing an interest in the future of their community.
This, we dare say, is the best news we’ve heard out of city hall in sometime.

One minor question with the Green New Deal

To the editor,
With the approach of the next presidential election less than two years away, it is inevitable that the aspirants for the presidency grasp at everything that will increase their notoriety. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has given members of the Democrat Party a marvelous opportunity for notoriety: The Green New Deal. It is amusing to watch and listen to the folks express support – enthusiastic support – for Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s ideas.
