Cedars, cottonwoods, and frogs

When I feel down, one of the things that can pick me up and help me regain perspective in life, is spending time in nature. One of my favorite spots in Glencoe for doing this, is a bench next to a large cottonwood tree that is flanked by cedars and a wonderful white oak. I was out there today seeking some guidance in life and became so fulfilled, I penned this letter to share this precious spot. Close by this bench, during this wet summer is a family of seven ducks and dozens of frogs chasing the water bugs skimming over the algae covered fishing pond.

It is nut season. Can you say that?

The cascade is building. It starts with an occasion clunk, and builds to a series of clunks, thunks and boinks. Pretty soon it will build to a crescendo of items falling from the sky.
It’s nut season in my neighborhood, and it has picked up a head of steam lately.
That, in turn, increases sightings of pesky squirrels in the neighborhood, too. Not that the squirrels have ever left, it just seems they become more annoying, if that’s possible.

Local organizations give a lot to our communities

The Glencoe Rotary Club recently planted trees at the school. The Lion’s Club donated playground equipment at Oak Leaf Park.
The Brownton Lions Club gave money for AEDs and playground equipment.
It seems like an organization is at just about every Silver Lake City Council meeting presenting a donation.
The Lions Clubs, American Legions, Auxiliaries, VFW give a lot to our communities, school groups and other local organizations.
These are just a very few examples, we cannot begin to name everything our groups do.

McLeod Cooperative Power announces new location in Glencoe

The McLeod Cooperative Power Board of Directors today announced its decision to combine and replace its facilities onto one site in the city of Glencoe East Industrial Park. After about a year of negotiations with the city of Glencoe for an approximate 10-acre site, the Co-op has the parcel it needs to remedy a too-small garage for today’s large bucket trucks; gain efficiencies by co-locating the pole yard, garage, and offices on one site; provide better access for customers; and serve power to itself through construction of a new facility.

New Glencoe business offers new fitness options

Glencoe’s Hennepin Avenue is home to a new business headed by three motivated individuals, Samantha Jung, Alex Jung and Dan Mitchell, who want to provide an additional outlet for fitness in Glencoe. Midwest Martial Arts & Fitness, nestled cozily between Home Solutions and Gert & Erma’s, is a studio with character. It embodies all the elements one would expect to see when walking into a place that promotes fitness through less-traditional methods like Taekwondo and PiYo (a culmination of pilates and yoga).
