Ruschmeiers place flags at area cemeteries

After serving in the U.S. Navy, Dave Ruschmeier volunteered each Memorial Day to take care of the gravesites of his parents and other family members who served in the military. This coming week, he’ll make sure their final resting places and the graves of many more receive the honors they have earned.

With a better-than-expected price for a trade-in and a lower-than-expected bid price, the Glencoe Light and Power board unanimously approved the purchase of a new Kabota excavator Monday, May 23.

There was no reason to doubt Kay (Lacher) Husfeldt had the intelligence to finish her bachelor’s degree at the University of Minnesota. She had managed several large, multi-faceted organizations with statewide reach, held elected office, and had managed a large suburban apartment complex.

Board makes 2022 county fair admission free event

McLeod County and its Coronavirus Relief Fund (CRF) Committee has been diligently considering allocation of the $6.8 million in American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA) funds received from the federal government. Funds must be allocated by the end of 2024 and spent before the end of 2026.
The board of commissioners, at its meeting May 17, allocated another $650,000.
The first recommendation from the committee was to allocate $100,000 to the McLeod Agricultural Association to allow the association to waive admission fees for the 150th anniversary of the McLeod County Fair in 2022.

In an ideal world, the houses near the intersection of East 11th Street and North Chandler Avenue might be commercial property or perhaps high-density residential. Instead, Eddie Gould and Sandy Olson live there in a single-family house.

Silver Lake resident looking to install community sign

When it comes to getting things done, the residents and organizations of Silver Lake will get it done. From pool upgrades to auditorium windows, volunteers are there to help with time and donations.
So, it is not surprise that a local resident is at it again.
Over the last couple of months, Silver Lake resident James Nowak has been researching the possibility of installing a LED sign at the corner of Lane Avenue and Highway 7 just north of the city’s pool.

Silver Lake horseshoe pits improved for upcoming league play

Several members of the Silver Lake Horseshoe League volunteered to upgrade the horseshoe pits at the Silver Lake Sports Complex adjacent to the municipal pool in time for league play to begin Wednesday, June 1, 7 p.m.

GSL Panthers advance in softball section playoffs

Solid pitching, defense and a robust offense have the GSL softball team right where it wants to be heading into the double-elimination portion of the playoffs this week.
After Monday’s, May 23, win over Southwest Christian, the Panthers took on Annandale yesterday, Tuesday, May 24, after The Chronicle went to press. Win or lose, GSL expects to play tomorrow at Rockford, hosts for the playoffs. If GSL won, they expect to play the host Rockets. If they fell to Annandale, they figure to play against Central (NYA).

Panthers run their way to All-WCC West honors

A handful of Glencoe-Silver Lake athletes earned all-conference honors at the conference meet Tuesday, May 17, in Rockford. The awards went to winners in the respective events – Brooklyn Christianson, Mylea Monahan, Malayh Metcalf and Ellie Sonju – in the girls’ 4-by-200 meter relay, Malayh Metcalf in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and Connor Hallaway in the 800-meter run.

GSL golfers shine heading down the conference stretch

Heading into the section golf competition, the GSL girls’ and boys’ teams both enjoyed successful showings in their final conference competitions.
The Panthers will be at the section meets next week in New Prague. The boys’ section meet is Tuesday, May 31, at New Prague Golf Club. The GSL girls will compete at the section meet Wednesday, June 1. Competition begins both days at 9 a.m.
