Manuel Garnica Cordero, 43, of Glencoe

Manuel “Arturo” Garnica Cordero, 43, of Glencoe, passed away Saturday, May 7, in Howard Lake.
A Mass of Christian burial was held Friday, May 20, 2 p.m., at the Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe. Visitation was held Thursday, May 19, 4 to 8 p.m., at Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe. A prayer service was held at 4 p.m. at the chapel. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service at the church.
The Rev. John Hayes was the officiating clergy.
Family and friends of Manuel “Arturo” Garnica Cordero were the casket-berers.

Courtney Dunn, 27, of Parkers Prairie

Courtney L. B. (Blake) Dunn, 27, of Parkers Prairie, died by suicide Friday, May 20, in Pipestone.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 27, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Parkers Prairie with Rev. Kirk Lee officiating.
Music will be provided by Kristi Wussow and Jeff Roste. Please honor Courtney’s memory by attending her celebration dressed casually.
Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Parkers Prairie and will continue one hour prior to the service.

Flag ceremony

Boys Scouts and adult leaders from Glencoe Troop 352 and adult leaders recently unfolded a new American flag and presented it to Millie Beneke Manor, replacing the facility’s old, weathered flag during a flag raising ceremony. The group included (from left) Scout leader Todd Eischens, Scouts Micaiah Noling, Brenden Miguel, Prescott Wingate, Cayden Miguel, Scout leaders Kevin Dietz and Michael Dietz.

After 48 years in the business, John Mons is dialing back his time spent on the air, from full-time afternoons to Saturday morning.

GSL’s National Honor Society

GSL inducted 16 new members into the National Honor Society Sunday evening in a ceremony at the school. The new inductees join 28 existing NHS members who are seniors.

Panthers looking for baseball consistency

GSL shortstop Damion Schwartz took the throw from catcher Beau Lepel in time to nail a Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted base thief Thursday, May 12, at Vollmer Field. The Lakers had the last laugh, defeating GSL, 7-0.

New councilor in Silver Lake

Silver Lake has a new member on its city council. Joanna Jacobs was given the oath of office by City Clerk/Treasurer Diane Pedersen at the start of Monday night’s meeting. Jacobs will fill the seat left vacant by Michelle Schneider who moved out of the area, through the end of 2022. The open seat will be on November 2022 ballot.

Blood moon

A total lunar eclipse gave a full moon over Glencoe an eerie red tint late Sunday night, May 15. The change in the moon’s color began after 10 p.m. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the Earth's shadow. It appears red, which is known as a blood moon, because light is scattered through the Earth's atmosphere, much like during a sunset.

County denies Glencoe’s abatement request

The McLeod County Board didn’t take long to deny a request from the City of Glencoe to participate in a tax abatement for a proposed hotel within the city.
Jon Jerabek, Glencoe’s assistant city administrator, told the board Tuesday morning, May 17, the Glencoe City Council has approved a $500,000 tax abatement which is necessary to secure the financing for the project and create a high enough return on investment to secure investors.

City council OKs support for Glencoe Days

Glencoe’s community festival will enjoy the support it needs from the city. Monday, May 16, the city council approved requests for Glencoe Days. Glencoe Days is slated to run June 24-26. With Councilor John Schrupp absent, the city council voted 4-0 in favor of assistance in the form of the city parks department in setting up and tearing down equipment and temporary facilities at Oak Leaf Park. The council also OK’d a request for a beer license, June 24-25, and agreed to extend the park hours to 12:30 a.m. for Friday and Saturday night, June 24-25.
