Glencoe police, firefighters will benefit from radio purchase

Taking advantage of McLeod County’s use of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding, the Glencoe City Council was able to fund the acquisition of 50 new handheld radios to replace aging devices.

Trailblazer Transit board concerned about aging fleet

An aging fleet exceeding U.S. Department of Transportation standards for mileage has Trailblazer Transit concerned about overdue orders of replacements.
At its meeting Thursday, March 17, Gary Ludwig, Trailblazer Transit’s executive director, reported 26 of the service’s 40 buses exceed the DOT’s 150,000 mile guideline for replacement eligibility. Of those 26, 19 have over 200,000 miles on them, Ludwig told the Trailblazer commissioners representing McLeod, Sibley and Wright counties.

Hutchinson man charged in drive-by shooting in Glencoe

An argument at a party a week before Christmas led to a drive-by shooting on Glencoe’s west side and felony charges against a Hutchinson man.
Mario Garza Jr. faces two felony charges – drive-by shooting of an occupied building and ineligible person in possession of a firearm – in connection with the shooting along the 700 block of West 15th Street during the early morning hours of Dec. 19, 2021.

Panthers send team to Knowledge Bowl state meet

Panthers compete against themselves in final round

Rallying from a slow start, the GSL Lavender Knowledge Bowl team earned a spot in the state tournament next month in Brainerd.
The GSL Lavender team includes Zach Reichow, Aaron Ward, Jesse Dahlke and Lucas Brelje. They finished third with 94½ points. Montevideo Pythons took second with 97 and Holy Family Black posted the top score at the regional event with 97. GSL Lilac finished fourth with an 88.

Is there chemistry between females and science? Club says 'yes'

“All the presidents of GSL’s science club have been female,” said Ashley Wise, ppresident of the GSL Science Club. “The club even has more females than males. My ninth-grade chemistry teacher, Ms. Koehler, took us on a field trip to the science museum and that’s when my passion for science really began.”
Emily Koehler is a Ridgewater College professor in Hutchinson and the head advisor of the GSL Science Club. She is a previous GSL chemistry teacher.

Section champions – Glencoe-Silver Lake Panthers face Minneapolis North in opening round

Glencoe-Silver Lake earned the section championship hardware with a 62-51 win over the Eagles Friday, March 18, at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
It’s the first time the Panthers have earned a trip to the state hoops tournament since 2001.
Glencoe-Silver Lake topped Maple River with a solid defensive game plan that included cutting off passing lanes to prevent the Eagles from getting good shots inside and forcing highly-contested outside shots. The Eagles entered the section title game averaging 74.7 points per playoff game offensively. The plan worked.

Happy campers – GSL baseball team’s annual camp a big hit with young players

A third-grader cranes his neck looking up at the high school baseball player showing him the correct way to catch and throw a baseball. Both the third-grader and varsity player have big smiles on their face.
It’s hard to tell who is having the most fun, the little kid or the big kid. That includes the coach.
“This is my sweet spot,” GSL baseball coach Dean Schwirtz said.

Have you heard of the Georgia Guidestones? According to Wikipedia, this 19 feet, 3 inches tall granite monument located in the state of Georgia is inscribed with 10 guidelines or principles in eight different languages. The first guideline is maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.

Activities are worth the time, investment – Our view: Activities are a plus for students, community

It has been suggested to us the newspaper puts too much emphasis on covering high school sports in Glencoe. It has also been suggested we put too much energy into covering schools in general.
In both cases, we respectfully disagree.
