Panther Senior Spotlight: Eli Ehrke, football and basketball

On Wednesday morning this
past week Eli Ehrke officially
signed a letter of intent to play
basketball for division II University
of Sioux Falls. “I’m relieved,
now I can focus on the season,”
Ehrke said of the official commitment.
The University of Sioux
Falls was Ehrke’s top college
choice because of the colleges emphasis
on business management,
which will be Ehrke’s area of
study. In fact, a majority of
Ehrke’s future basketball teammates
at USF are also business
majors.

GSL Panther tennis: three decades, one coach

This fall marked the GSL
tennis programs 30th year in
existence. The program started
in the fall of 1994, which was
the first year that Glencoe and
Silver Lake consolidated.
Head coach Robert
DeCorsey has been at the helm
for all 30 of those years. You
could call it an accident though,
as DeCorsey was only supposed
to be the assistant coach
when the new program was
formed. Then athletic director
Kathy Olson had another person
lined up to be the head
coach, a name now forgotten to
time, but as the fates would
have it, the other coach flaked
and GSL tennis would fall into

County board tables decision on cannabis ordinance

The legalization of cannabis products
in Minnesota last summer has
left governmental agencies trying to
figure out how to regulate the use.
While selling cannabis will not be
legal in the state until 2025, personal
use and growing is legal.
The McLeod County officials have
been working on an ordinance regulating
the use of cannabis and the
products derived from it in public
places and places of public accommodation.
After a number of workshops with
commissioners and other stake holders,
the board held a public hearing
regarding the proposed ordinance.

Dave Style returns to the sidelines for GSL Football

The 2023 GSL football season
saw the return of a familiar
face to the sidelines, longtime
GSL assistant coach
Dave Style returned to lead
the defense for the Panthers
new coaching staff, headed by
Gary Kosek.
Style, a 1981 graduated of
Glencoe High School, was
raised by a coach and legendary
Glencoe athletic director
Jerry Style, where Dave
was exposed early and often to
the life of coach.

GSL senior football players leave lasting impact

This years seniors on the
GSL football team will leave a
foundation in which the Panther
football program can grow
from. Head coach Gary Kosek
praised “The demeanor of our
seniors,” who had to deal with
a lot of change from their junior
to their senior season, but
came into the season with good
attitudes and were ready to go
to work.

As for the season as a whole,
coach Kosek was optimistic,
“we got better. We had to fight
through some adversity. A lot
of the young guys got some
playing time. We are trending
in the right direction.”

Sell named Assistant Coach of the Year

Junior varsity GSL baseball
coach Dave Sell has been
awarded the 2023 Assistant
Coach of the Year by the Minnesota
State High School
League (MSHSL). He will be
honored along with GSL’s
head baseball coach Dean
Schwirtz during Twins fest on
January 13, 2024 at Target

Sell graduated from Glencoe
High School in 1982
where he played basketball

GACC celebrates another year

The Glencoe Area Chamber of
Commerce celebrated another successful
year with its annual banquet
Nov. 1.

Three Glencoe residents were
asked why they chose to make Glencoe
their home.

Victor Garcia, GSL grad and owner
of Victor’s PCs, said Glencoe has lots
of opportunities for businesses and
residents. He added he always remembers
GSL Superintendent Chris
Sonju’s words, “Stay on the path.”
Sonju was most likely referring to the
sidewalk between Lincoln and the
high school (before the addition), but
Garcia said he has always felt it was
good life advice.
