Recent rains help, but area farmers keeping an eye to the sky

While they are pleased the area has seen rainfall the past few days, area farmers realize their hope for a good crop is still hanging in the balance of more rainfall in the days and weeks to come.
Brian Thalmann of Plato, said the area will still need up to four inches of rain in July. The dearth of rain in June has set the crop back somewhat, but there is still time for his corn to make a comeback thanks to the one-inch plus the area saw since Saturday. The rainfall is especially important since tasseling leads to the growth of the ear of corn.

Beckers follow Glencoe Days Medallion clues to ‘the old ball game’

When her children were younger, Linda Becker was among those searching for the chamber medallion. The fun of the hunt never left her.
Friday night, while the Glencoe Brewers were in the first inning of their rivalry game with the Plato Blue Jays in a Glencoe Days special at Vollmer Field, Linda and Charlie Becker found the Glencoe Days hidden medallion and claimed the $250 prize.

There’s plenty to do at Glencoe Library dring July

The Glencoe Public Library continues to provide services as it recovers from the pandemic. The public computer lab is usable with appointments.
Children’s programs are being organized to be in-person, yet socially distanced, and safe for all. Storytimes will be the first and third Tuesdays at 9:30 or 10:30 a.m., and the second and fourth Tuesdays of July at 9:30 and 10:30. Registration is needed so the number of participants keeps everyone safe. Registrants will be asked to commit to attending the first and third or second and fourth Tuesday of the month.

Glencoe endures five games without a win

Brewers throw a shutout at Plato
After taking a peek at their season from atop the break-even mark, a five-game slide was hardly what the Brewers were looking for. Glencoe brought the losing streak to an end Friday with a win over Plato.
But as they work their way through a tough portion of the schedule, the Brewers are working to build consistency. A tough loss to Waconia Sunday will be followed by a showdown with rival Arlington Monday, July 5, 7:30 p.m., within the friendly confines of Vollmer Field.

For better or worse, the whole world is in this together

By Lee Hamilton
No matter how hard we try, we really can’t avoid one another. We live in a world where what takes place somewhere else on the globe has a very good chance of affecting us, along with many others.
The pandemic, of course, is a useful – if sobering – example. A virus that infected humans in one city in China spread with breathtaking speed around the world, beyond the power of governments, or anyone else, to stop it.

Thanks so much – Our view: Volunteers make Glencoe Days shine

If you’re not certain just how much volunteers can accomplish in today’s world, there are plenty of good examples all around you. From the food shelf, food giveaways, Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross blood drives, people driving veterans to their appointments at the VA, the list could go on and on and on.
This past week, we saw before our own eyes the power of volunteerism here in Glencoe. A team of volunteers gave their time Friday night, a rainy Saturday, Saturday evening and much of Sunday all for Glencoe Days, a community celebration bringing people together.

Start writing tickets

We appreciate the idea of the Glencoe Police Department working to educate people in a community policing approach rather than taking a hard line in most cases.
The department has issued dozens of verbal warnings the past few weeks to drivers ignoring road-closed barricades along Morningside Drive, between East 10th and 11th streets.
By now, nobody can claim they didn’t know the barricades were in place. There are reports of dozens of drivers each day ignoring the barricades.
Apparently, it’s just too inconvenient to drive around to Falcon Avenue via Highway 212.
