MN consumers have new protections for debt collection and payday loans

Consumers have new protections involving debt collection and payday lending that affect thousands of Minnesotans. The new laws were passed in the 2023 Legislative Session and signed into law by Governor Tim Walz in May. The Minnesota Department of Commerce is implementing the laws.

Silver Lake’s Pola-Czesky Days offers fun for all

Toilet bowl racing, a kickball tournament, the royalty coronation, a parade and more return this weekend to celebrate Silver Lake’s 53rd annual Pola-Czesky Days in Silver Lake. Events kick off on Friday, August 4, and go until Sunday, August 6. All weekend, there will be a medallion hunt with clues posted to the Pola-Czesky Days Facebook page.

Planning Commission reviews land use

With the adoption of the City of Glencoe’s most recent comprehensive plan, the Planning and Industrial Commission, along with city staff and City Attorney Mark Ostlund, have been reviewing the city’s zoning codes and land use section within the city’s ordinances.
At the July Planning and Industrial Commission meeting, July 17, commissioners reviewed some of the proposed changes suggested from previous meetings in March and May.

Elaine Sprengeler, 88, Plato

Elaine Francis Sprengeler, age 88, of Plato, passed away on Friday, July 14, at GlenFields Living with Care in Glencoe.
A funeral service was held Saturday, July 22, 11 a.m., at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg, with interment at the church cemetery.
A visitation was held Saturday, July 22, from 9-11 a.m., two hours prior to the service at the church.
Vicar Todd Bentz officiated the service, Kathy Oelfke served as organist and soloist Dan Sprengeler sang “The Lord’s Prayer”.
Special music “Gracious Spirit, Dwell With Me”, was performed by the Emanuel Lutheran Church Choir.

The Glencoe Brewers lost to the Arlington A’s in a non-league tune up game that was called off while the Brewers were rallying in the top of the seventh inning.
Zach Voelz hit a line drive single as the sky opened up to a hard rain. The hit scored Ty Christensen and gave the Brewers the lead 7-6 (three runs later nullified). After one pitch to the Brewers right fielder Brockton Jordahl the umpire signaled for a delay prompting the Arlington players to get the tarps out and cover the mound and home plate circles.

The Bruins got another complete nine-inning game from Ryan Grams to halt Brownton’s four game losing streak.
Carver took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when first baseman Jake Margo hit a two out double to score second baseman Brandt Puzak (single).
The Bruins tied the game at one apiece when center fielder Andy Prieve hit a two out single RBI single that scored Ryan Grams.

Plato’s starting pitcher Drew Hedtke pitched a complete nine inning no hitter against the Hollanders on Tuesday night. Hedtke needed just 96 pitches, striking out nine and walking two batters.
The Plato offense shook off a bad weekend of hitting to put up 12 hits enroute to their six runs scored.
The Blue Jays took an immediate lead 1-0 in the top of the first inning when Brady Graupmann singled to score Bennett Lepel.

Summertime and county fair season go hand in hand. Going on carnival rides, eating food truck meals, seeing many different animals, and going through all of the exhibit buildings, county fairs are the place to be. But have you thought about different biosecurity practices when attending one?
According to the Upper Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center (UMASH), “Biosecurity is a set of practices used to prevent the diseases and the pathogens that carry them – viruses, bacteria, funguses, parasites and other microorganisms – away from animals, property, and people.”

Loncorich Family Farms of Stewart named McLeod County’s 2023 Farm Family of the Year

Loncorich Family Farms of Stewart started over 40 years ago when Mike, the son of cash crop farmers Leonard and Frances (Decker) Loncorich, married Barb Trettin. Mike and Leonard farmed together, and Mike and Barb also had a few feeder cattle, sheep and chickens. Barb also worked off the farm and Mike was a mail carrier.

Brownton Days start Fri.

Brownton Days is here again. This year’s celebration will take place July 28 and 29 and the schedule is jammed packed with fun.
The festivities kick off Friday with a meat raffle and live music at the Brownton Bar and Grill.
Saturday’s line-up has fun for all ages beginning at 11 a.m. in the city park. Activities include kids’ gaga ball, face painting and vendor craft fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., a bean bag tournament and goat yoga at 11 a.m., car show from 12 to 4 p.m. as well as a free bounce house at the same time.
