Out for a Sunday stroll

With temps in the low-20s and bright sunshine, Mike and Joyce Meuleners of Young America Township were in Glencoe visiting family Sunday. They enjoyed a stroll along East 16th Street with their granddaughter, Miss Blake, and pet chihuahua, Linus.

Panthers girls’ hoops soars over White Hawks

Mylea Monahan helped GSL girls’ hoops win by 25 points against Mound Westonka home last Thursday, Jan. 21. Monahan was one of the night’s top scorers, earning seven points.

‘I get back up again’

Nora Cohrs of Glencoe and her friend Drake Voigt of Glencoe took to the ice at the rink at the park on North Greeley Avenue on a mild Sunday afternoon. Cohrs is learning to skate and is not afraid of taking a spill in the name of learning. “When I fall down,” she said, “I get back up again.”

GSL gymnasts prepare to jump into season opener

Taryn Zellman practiced her vaulting skills last Wednesday, Jan. 20, to prepare herself for GSL gymnastics’ first meet of the season this Thursday. Head Coach Kim Hahn said new addition Zellman’s been “polishing up” her skills as she came up from the club team.

Ryan Freitag and his son, Benton (behind him with a shovel), cleared the driveway at a neighbor’s house at the corner of East 14th Street and North DeSoto Avenue Sunday. The neighbor was out of town for the day and the father-son team made quick work of clearing the fluffy, new fallen snow as a surprise.

County Fair Board OKs four-day fair starting in ‘21

After a year on the shelf because of the pandemic, the McLeod County Fair will be back this summer for a four-day run Aug. 19-22. The county fair board recently OK’d the switch to the four-day fair.

Glencoe advances public works projects

East 10th Street, truck, Highway 22 sewer lines moving forward

A trio of public works initiatives was a big part of last week’s city council meeting, with approvals for continued work preparing for the East 10th Street resurfacing project, the purchase of a new biosolid truck and chassis and televising and cleaning of storm water sewer beneath Highway 22 through downtown Glencoe all advancing.
Because of the Martin Luther King federal holiday Monday, Jan. 18, the council meeting was held Tuesday, Jan. 19.

McLeod County offering second round of COVID-19 relief grants

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners once again has the opportunity to give back to its business owners and non-profits.
The county received $709,749 from the State of Minnesota as part of the $216 billion relief funds passed by Minnesota Legislature in mid-December.
At its meeting Jan. 19, the county board approved the guidelines and timeline for the new funds, recommended by the Coronavirus Relief Funds (CRF) committee.

'Blizzard Blast’ raises money for hospice care

Luann Harms knew when it was time to say goodbye to her husband, Fred Harms, last summer. She gave him a hug, a kiss and told Fred she loved him as he passed away in her arms.
As he peacefully slipped away at home, Harms was thankful for the hospice care her husband received during the final two weeks of his life.
“It was the best decision we made,” Harms said.
