City OKs pay raise for non-union staff

Thanks to favorable insurance rates for 2021, the Glencoe city staff won’t have to worry as much about the raise the city council approved for the coming year gobbled up by premium increases.
In its final meeting of 2020, the city council was divided over the size of pay increase to approve for its 31 non-union employees. The council considered increases ranging from 1.6 percent to 3 percent, finally settling on 2¼ percent. The council approved the raise by a 3-2 vote with councilors Milan Alexander and Allen Robeck casting the opposing votes.

Rep. Gruenhagen among backers of voter fraud lawsuit

Glencoe’s representative in the Minnesota House was among the Minnesota Republican lawmakers who signed a letter supporting Texas’s attorney general in a lawsuit to invalidate the 2020 elections and claiming Minnesota’s elections were also illegally conducted.

Mayor Wilson, Councilor Alexander bring their service to city to a close

He came to town from Missouri in 1985, opened a hardware store and began to plan for the future.
Along the way, Randy Wilson served 20 years as a Glencoe volunteer firefighter. He also helped guide the community as a member of the city council, serving two decades as a councilor and mayor.

McLeod County Parks superintendent retires after 41 years on the job

After 41 years on the job, Al Koglin, McLeod County Parks superintendent, just knew it was time to say goodbye.
Koglin is retiring Jan. 4. He started August, 1979. He looks forward to passing the baton to someone with different ideas.
“I think somewhere in the back of my head, it was time,” Koglin said. “I think it was time for somebody else to come in, to take over.”

Silver Lake approves 2021 levy increase

The Silver Lake City Council approved a $549,412 tax levy, 1.75 percent increase from 2020, following its truth-in-taxation hearing Monday, Dec. 21. The 2020 levy was set at $539,865.
The final levy amount is a significant decrease from the $572,796 or 6.53 percent preliminary tax levy increase approved by the council in September. The increase could create a slight reduction in the city’s share of the tax bill, said ity Clerk Jon Jerabek.

Silver Lake lighting winners announced

The Silver Lake Winterfest Committee and City of Silver Lake held its annual lighting contest Dec. 18 and recently announced its four winners.
Dean Ellingson and Leah Spring at 300 Frank St. won first place with a $50 prize.

GSL volleyball player, assistant coach Lemke receive state awards

Glencoe-Silver Lake senior Miah Monahan was named first team all state, and GSL volleyball assistant coach Mary Lemke was named assistant coach of the year section 2AA.
The two honorees credited Lori “Murf” Schwirtz, GSL head volleyball coach, for their awards and are proud to have worked with her while honing their own skills.

Winter sports get green light

he winter sports season at Glencoe-Silver Lake High School has the Minnesota State High School League’s blessing to start Monday, Jan. 4.
Players in girls’ and boys’ basketball, wrestling, gymnastics and dance will be allowed to begin after 3:30 p.m. to allow distance learners to complete their classes, said Dean Schwirtz, GSL’s activities director.
Competition can begin Jan. 18.

Adam Smith is considered as the father of capitalism.
He proposed that the market system is a good way to allocate resources and set prices for goods produced. But he also stated there is a need to have taxes and laws to achieve a setting that enables less fortunate people to have security and an opportunity to be educated and have access to needed health care.
