Beau ready for next step in his fight

For months, Brenda and Dave Brelje were trying to find out what was causing their young son’s debilitating headaches.
When a doctor told the couple their son Beau has a mass growing on his brain, the news knocked Brenda off her feet. Now, months later, Beau is preparing for the next round in his fight with ependymoma, a cancerous tumor that grows on the brain or spine. He’ll start a series of chemotherapy treatments June 22 at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis. The treatment will include a spinal tap and MRI.

Planning commission advances gravel mine projects, events center

With the backing of the county planning commission, the McLeod County Board will consider approval of a pair of mining operations and an events center in the Glencoe area.
Wednesday morning, the commission unanimously OK’d the three applications after separate public hearings on conditional-use permits. The county board is expected to consider the proposals on its consent agenda on the June 16 county board meeting consent agenda.

City backs final plat for Glenview Estates Second Addition

After two years of working with city staff and the planning commission to try and reach a plan most can live with while still allowing the developer to move forward with a financially viable development, the Glencoe City Council approved a final plat for Glenview Estates Second Addition Monday, June 1.
The council voted 3-2, with councilors Milan Alexander and Allen Robeck dissenting, to approve the final plat for the second phase of a residential development south of East First Street east of Hennepin Avenue and west of Edgewood Drive.

After 31 years, Schiller says farewell

He took a walk through a quiet production area Friday morning at 6:30. It was a chance for Mike Schiller to reflect on how far the company he had worked at for over 30 years has come.
It was also a chance to say goodbye.

Taggart joins Chronicle staff

The McLeod County Chronicle is welcoming a new reporter, Brianna Taggart.
The 22-year-old started at the newspaper June 1 after graduating from the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) this past spring with degrees in journalism and communication.
Taggart started her love for journalism in her hometown of Wadena, and has known she wanted to be a journalist since she was young.
While at UMD, Taggert had two reporting internships, a blogger position for the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute and served as managing editor for the student-run campus news organization.

Zehnder named Jenny Resch Memorial Scholarship honoree

Glencoe-Silver Lake eighth-grader Lucia Beste Zehnder was recently selected the winner of the $200 Jenny Resch Memorial Scholarship for the 2019-2020 school year.
Zehnder was selected because she has adopted Jenny Resch’s zest for life and the motto, as Emerson wrote, “What lies behind us and what lies before us, are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” The Mary and Dave Resch family, Jenny’s parents, presents the award annually with the hope it will act as a catalyst to help students overcome and achieve when confronted with adversity.

Food giveaway set for tomorrow at Glencoe’s Oak Leaf Park

A no-cost food giveaway will be held at Oak Leaf Park tomorrow, Thursday, June 4, noon, at Glencoe’s Oak Leaf Park.
Each household should receive one box of produce, one box of mixed dairy products and one box of meat. The food distribution is labeled a COVID Food Assistance Program (CFAP) program, a farmers’ assistance program from the USDA providing boxed food to the emergency food system.
People intending to pick up food should enter the park via East Fifth Street and join a line extending around the park.

Petersen makes deans’ list

Elise Petersen of Glencoe qualified for the Spring 2020 deans' list at Belmont University. Eligibility is based on a minimum course load of 12 hours and a quality grade point average of 3.5 with no grade below a C.

DFLer Chad Tschimperle files to take on Newman for Minnesota Senate seat

Chad Tschimperle, a Cokato construction worker recently endorsed by the Minnesota Democrat-Farmer-Labor Party, will run for the Minnesota Senate District 18 seat Sen. Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, holds.
Tschimperle has been a construction laborer since 1989 and a member of Local 563 Laborers’ Union since 2001. He has worked on construction projects all over Minnesota. Tschimperle plans to retire in December. Besides his leadership on construction crews, he has been an active volunteer and chairman of the Meeker-Cokato DFL and served on a local cemetery maintenance board.

Incumbents being challenged in re-election bids for McLeod County Board

With the exception of a McLeod County commissioner who previously announced he would not seek re-election, incumbent county and state elected officials stated plans to keep their jobs in the filing period that closed this week.
The filing period closed Tuesday, June 2, 5 p.m., after The Chronicle went to press.
In McLeod County’s first commissioner district, Anthony Kadlec of Hutchinson and Nathan Schmalz of Lester Prairie have filed to run to replace Commissioner Ron Shimanski of Silver Lake. Shimanski indicated earlier this year he would not seek re-election.
