Flawed as democracy is, the alternatives don’t stack up

Over the last few years, the health of American democracy has come under great scrutiny. Polling routinely shows that Americans are concerned that democratic institutions aren’t working as well as they ought to. Inevitably, this brings up the question of whether we can mend our problems or if the system of representative democracy itself is fundamentally broken.

Ordinances – Our view: Ignored they aren’t worth much

We saw last week two instances where elected officials faced a decision on two projects. While the details of the proposals vary somewhat, a common question was raised in the aftermath.
Monday night, June 1, the Glencoe City Council voted 3-2 in favor of Glenview Estates Second Addition, a plat for residential housing for slightly smaller, slightly less expensive housing than in the first addition. We’re talking $250,000ish vs. $350,000 or so. Tuesday morning, June 2, the county board voted 3-2 against a solar garden on land east of Silver Lake.

Marcella Artis “Rennecke” Cohrs, 101, of Glencoe, passed away Tuesday, March 17, at Good Samaritan Society in Arlington.

LeAnn Landkammer, 77, of Glencoe

LeAnn May (Mead) Landkammer, 77, of Glencoe, lost her battle with cancer Monday, June 1. She passed away peacefully at GlenFields Living with Care in Glencoe, with family by her side.
A gathering of family and friends was held Sunday, June 7, 2 to 4 p.m., at the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe.
Pastor Daniel Welch was the officiating clergy
Paul Otte was the organist.
“On Eagle’s Wings,” “How Great Thou Art” and “Jesus Lead Thou On” were the congregational hymns.

Dennis Russenberger, 80, of Glencoe

Dennis Lee Russenberger, 80, of Glencoe, passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, at Glencoe Regional Health Services in Glencoe.
A private family memorial service was held at Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe, Minnesota, with internment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Pastor Jon Niebuhr was the officiating clergy.
Marjorie Hemmann was the pianist. Cindy, Deb, Becky and DeeAnn provided special music, “It Is Well.”
“Rock of Ages” and “Jesus Loves Me” were the congregational hymns.
Bernie Russenberger was an honorary urn-bearer.

Merle Schlueter, 80, of Hutchinson

Merle M. Schlueter, 80, of Hutchinson, passed away Friday, May 29, at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids.
A graveside service was held Saturday, June 6, 2 p.m., at Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Hutchinson with a drive-thru visitation from 1 to 2 p. m. also at the Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Hutchinson.
Pastor Gerhard Bode was the officiating clergy.
“Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art” and “Abide With Me” was the special music.
Brian Gruenwalt, Andrew Mackenthun, Joseph Mitchell, Dale Schlueter, Gary Schlueter and Owen Schlueter were the casket-bearers.

Mary Ann Baumann, 70, of Winsted passed away April 15, at her residence.
A memorial Mass of Christian burial for Mary Ann Baumann will be held Friday, June 12, 10 a.m., at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted.
Inurnment will follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery.
A visitation will be held Thursday, June 11, 4 to 8 p.m., at the Chilson Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. No further visitation will be held Friday morning.
Social distancing is required.

Calin King, infant, of Caledonia

Calin Vincent King, infant son of Troy and Katie (Mathews) King, passed away Tuesday, June 2, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
A private family service will be held and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia.
Calin was born May 1, in Rochester. He is survived by his parents, Troy and Katie; his sister, Estelle; and his twin brother, Aiden.
Calin is survived by his grandparents, Kevin and Tammy Mathews, and Corey and Kerry King; great-grandparents, Helen Fisch, Dean and Linda King, Anna Mathews, Sue and Wallace Ide; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Margaret Nemec, 92, of Glencoe, passed away Sunday, June 7, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Arlington.
A private family Mass of Christian burial will be held at Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe, with interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Brenda Miller, 57, of Penn Township

Brenda K. Miller, 57, of Penn Township, passed away Sunday, June 7, at her home in Penn Township.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 13, 1 p.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brownton, with interment following in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Brownton.
A fellowship luncheon will be held at the Brownton City Park.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 12, 4 to 8 p.m., and will continue Saturday, one hour prior to the service, all at the church.
