Incumbents being challenged in re-election bids for McLeod County Board

With the exception of a McLeod County commissioner who previously announced he would not seek re-election, incumbent county and state elected officials stated plans to keep their jobs in the filing period that closed this week.
The filing period closed Tuesday, June 2, 5 p.m., after The Chronicle went to press.
In McLeod County’s first commissioner district, Anthony Kadlec of Hutchinson and Nathan Schmalz of Lester Prairie have filed to run to replace Commissioner Ron Shimanski of Silver Lake. Shimanski indicated earlier this year he would not seek re-election.

Christensen earns big honor

Zoe Christensen recalls the day in seventh grade she gave the shot put a try during a junior high track practice at Helen Baker Elementary School. She just missed plunking her coach in the noggin.

Silver Lake pool to remain closed for the season

In a world of uncertainty and few guidelines, local governments are making tough decisions on what is best for their communities.
The city of Silver Lake has not been exempt from these decisions. In a special meeting Wednesday, May 27, the Silver Lake City Council voted not to open the city pool for the 2020 season.
Under the guidelines from the state at the time of the meeting, the pool, if opened, would only be able to operate at half capacity or around 90 patrons and extra cleaning and sanitation measures would need to be taken.

Keri J. Kruckeberg, 51, of Kasson, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family Thursday, May 28, after a 2½-year courageously fought battle of glioblastoma.
A public visitation was held 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, June 1, at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home, 5421 Royal Place NW, Rochester. A private family service was held Tuesday, June 2, at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home with Pastor Pete Wyttenbach officiating. Those in attendance were required to wear masks and social distance in guidance to COVID-19 regulations.

Betty Rozeske, 82, of rural Silver Lake

Betty Jane Rozeske, 82, of rural Silver Lake passed away Sunday, May 24, at Hutchinson Health.
A private family Mass of Christian burial for Betty Rozeske was held Thursday, May 28, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake.The Rev. Tony Stubeda was the celebrant.
Alice Nowak was the organist and the reader for the Mass was Brian Stibal.
A visitation was held Thursday, May 28, 10 a.m. to noon, at the Maresh Funeral Home in Silver Lake.
She was born Nov. 1, 1937, in Biscay, the daughter of John “Jack” and Lillian (Prochaska) Sustacek.

Lavilla Schmalz, 94, of Lester Prairie

Lavilla Emma Ida (Schoenke) Schmalz, 94, of Lester Prairie, passed away Monday, May 25, at GlenFields Living with Care in Glencoe.
A private, family graveside service was held at St. Peter Lutheran Church Cemetery in Lester Prairie.
Pastor Joshua Arndt was the officiating clergy.
“Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” “Jesus Loves Me,” “Praise To The Lord, The Almighty” and “Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow” was the special music.

Lawrence Ardolf, 84, of Leste Prairie

Lawrence George “Larry” Ardolf, 84, of rural Lester Prairie, passed away April 28, with his loving family by his side.
A Mass of Christian burial for Lawrence G. “Larry” Ardolf will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake Friday, June 12, 11 a.m.
A visitation will be held at the Maresh Funeral Home Thursday, June 11, 4 to 8 p.m. Further visitation will be held Friday morning, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., at the funeral home.

Sylvia Pfeiler, 69, of Glencoe

Sylvia “Rosie” Pfeiler, 69, of Glencoe, passed away Monday, April 6, at Hutchinson Health in Hutchinson.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, June 12, 1 p.m., at Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe. Interment was held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Social distancing requirements will be in place.
