Teachers camping out on Lakeside Elementary roof

Josh Otto-Fisher, 5th-grade teacher at Lakeside Elementary, and Scott Picha, a fellow STEM teacher, made good on a promise to spend the night on the roof the night of Jan. 9 into the morning of Jan. 10 because their students at Lakeside and Lincoln elementaries exceeded their goals in the McLeod County Christmas Project. The children donated 472 toys, far surpassing their goal of 300. Otto-Fisher and Picha were on the roof the next morning to greet students form the rooftop.

GSL boys looking for more consistency on the hardwood

Having won three of its last four games, two by comfortable margins, one might not expect the GSL boys’ hoops team to be struggling with much. But in their ongoing pursuit of the complete performance, the Panthers are in search of consistency.
That’s important with tough competition on the horizon, said coach Rob DeCorsey. At 2-0 against conference opponents and 7-5 overall, the Panthers are looking for improvement.

4H shooting sports season opens tomorrow at fairgrounds

Youth from across McLeod County can join the 2020 4-H shooting sports project kick off Thursday, Jan. 16, 7 to 9 p.m., at the Little Crow Archery Building on the McLeod County Fairgrounds in Hutchinson.

GSL gymnasts have ‘rough’ pair of meets

The Panthers’ gymnasts scored 123.3 points in their bout against the Rockford Rockets, which carried the top score at 133.725 points. The Panthers also dropped to the sixth spot among as many teams in a meet Saturday against Farmington, White Bear Lake, St. Michael-Albertville, Redwing and Estelline Hendricks.
“The last two meets have been a little rough with tougher judges as well as a lot of beam falls all around. We are continuing to work on staying on the beam, less wobbles,” Head Coach Kim Hahn said.

Panthers girls’ basketball team rebounds from four-game losing streak

The Panthers’ girls basketball team split in its latest two-game stretch, falling to Annandale Tuesday, Jan. 7, 52-39, but snapping a four-game losing streak against Dassel-Cokato Thursday, Jan. 9, 61-47.

Although the game was closer than the final score may have suggested, where the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls went shot-for-shot, back-and-forth with the Cardinals.

Wins are a sign hard work is paying off for GSL/LP wrestling

After a challenging opening section, the Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team is starting to see the fruits of hard work. The Panthers won five of their seven matches as a team last week.
GSL/LP coach Lance Wurm said hard work and a commitment to improve each day has been the secret for a good week. The team defeated Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, New London-Spicer, Central (NYA), Spectrum High School and St. Clair while falling to St. Peter and Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield.
“The guys are working hard every day in practice,” Wurm said. “We’re just working on getting better.”

Alan Zimmerman, 67, of Brownton

Alan Zimmerman, 67, of Brownton, died Sunday Jan. 12, surrounded by his loving wife and four children at his home.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday Jan. 17, at Crosspoint Church (1215 Roberts Road) in Hutchinson, with Pastor Rick Stapleton officiating.
A gathering of family and friends will be held all at the church from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, one hour prior to the memorial service. Interment will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Brownton barber reflects: 50 years in business with 50 years of marriage

A special kind of party took place at the Brownton Community Center on Saturday, Jan. 11. Arden and Marilyn Alsleben celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary while also celebrating Arden’s 50th year as a professional barber.
Alsleben owns Brownton Barber Shop — a small building on 4th Avenue off Division Street, nestled in the city’s most popular hub for business.
