Elected county officials ask board for pay raises

McLeod County Auditor-Treasurer Connie Kurtzweg, Sheriff Scott Rehmann and Recorder Lynn Ette Schrupp each asked for raises at an annual elected officials meeting, Tuesday, Dec. 3, where the county’s elected officers update the county board on department functions over the past year.
Rehmann said he’s the lowest paid sheriff among other counties with populations more or less than 10,000 of McLeod County’s estimated 35,884 people. He added that his salary is also the lowest among the bordering counties, though he conceded operations are different in McLeod County than those counties.

Get your act together – Our view: Trailblazer board members must work together

McLeod County Commissioner Doug Krueger and anyone of like mind on the Trailblazer Transit Board of Directors owes the transit board and taxpayers in McLeod, Sibley and Wright counties a sincere apology.
Krueger said at a meeting earlier this year he hates public transit – not dislikes, or is frustrated by, or finds intolerable. Nope, he went with hate.
Hate. Really, commish?

Your local TnT hearing will provide you a headache

Want a headache? Well, just attend a county truth-in-taxation hearing and it’s almost guaranteed.
After being bombarded with so many numbers in a rapid-fire format, is it any wonder people leave these hearings with their heads spinning. That’s assuming they attend these tax hearings at all.

Letter to editor – State budget surplus belongs to Minnesota’s taxpayers

To the editor,
On Thursday, Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB) released its annual November budget forecast, showing an estimated budget surplus of $1.332 billion for the 2020-2021 biennium. The forecast, which is updated twice each year to reflect the state’s revenues and expenditures, will be used to guide the consideration of a supplemental budget during the upcoming legislative session.

Brownton raises levy 5 percent

The Brownton City Council set its final property tax levy for 2020 5 percent higher than this year’s levy at its council meeting Tuesday, Dec. 4.
Residents of Brownton will be levied for 71 percent of what the city plans to spend next year. Total revenue coming from the Brownton tax levy is $457,458, a 5 percent increase over last year.
Two residents who pleaded for the council to explain and lower the tax levy, who were also upset with county and school levy increases, were told the city doesn’t have a strong commercial base to take the burden off residents.

Stewart council approves final property tax levy

The city of Stewart increased its property tax levy by a half percent, amounting to just over $2,000 more than last year. The city is levying for a total amount of $420,939.
Stewart being one of the only cities in McLeod County to have a budget surplus of approximately $17,000, Mayor Jason Peirce suggested the council look at pouring that money into a street maintenance account that was cut by $30,000 to recoup some of the losses.

Sheriff’s office will help out Silver Lake Police Department for now

While Silver Lake police officers will continue performing their duties now that Chief RJ Cripps has left his position, the McLeod County Sheriff’s Office will provide administrative leadership until a new chief is hired.

Shimanski to retire from county board at end of 2020

The end of Tuesday’s McLeod County Board meeting brought with it the formal announcement of the end of Commissioner Ron Shimanski’s career in elected office. He’ll retire from the county board when his 2020 term expires.
Before the county went to closed session to discuss contract negotiations during the Dec. 3 meeting, Shimanski said, “I would like to announce that I will not be seeking re-election in 2020 for the office of McLeod County commissioner. At the conclusion of my current term, I will have spent 14 years in elected office.”
