You mean well, really Our view: There are times you should get out of the way

People willing to serve in elected office usually do so for admirable reasons. They generally want to do what they perceive is the right thing.
But there are occasions when the best thing to do is to state your piece, make your best argument on an issue, and then get out of the way. Monday, Oct. 14, was one of those times.

GSL's first concert of year Oct. 28

On Monday, Oct. 28, the Glencoe-Silver Lake Band and Choirs will present their first concert of the school year.
Admission is charged for this concert – --$6 for adults/$4 for students – with GSL activity passes honored for entrance. Concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the GSL High School Purple Gym (auditorium space is not available due to the fall musical).

Newman wants answers on reports of long waits for testing

In recent weeks, published news reports have chronicled the extraordinarily long wait times at some state-run driver’s testing stations. According to the reports, many driver’s license applicants are choosing to camp overnight outside testing facilities or drive hundreds of miles to secure an open testing slot. In addition, the reports note the state of Minnesota has special arrangements with certain private driving schools to offer their students premium testing slots.

Open enrollment is shorter this year — don't miss out on coverage.
MNsure's open enrollment period for 2020 health and dental coverage will be seven weeks long — beginning Nov. 1 and ending Dec. 23. Minnesotans should note that open enrollment is shorter than previous years and all those who enroll during open enrollment will have a start date of Jan.1.

American Legion hosting flag retirement ceremony Saturday

Area residents seeking proper, respectful retirement of their worn, tattered American flags have the opportunity for the appropriate disposal of the flags and to participate in the ceremony Saturday, Oct. 26, at Oak Leaf Park.
The Glencoe American Legion and VFW posts have about 200 American flags that are no longer usable. The American Legion will host an honorable disposal ceremony at noon in the park. People with flags they would like respectfully retired should be at the park at 11 a.m. for the flag to be prepared for disposal.

Remembering ‘Maury’: Doc McNeil built a legacy of caring for his patients

There were times when Maurice McNeil, M.D. could have located to a larger city with more patients and big-city surroundings. The small-town physician who rarely introduced himself as a “doctor” and preferred you call him Maury was very comfortable here.
Thursday evening, Oct. 17, the longtime family practice physician passed away at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson. He was 91.
“He was such a kind man and a fun guy. We had a lot of good times together,” said Carmen Forcier, McNeil’s wife and a nurse at a Twin Cities orthopedic center.

City moves to raze downtown building

There are still plenty of moves to complete before the building is razed, but the Glencoe City Council took the initial steps at converting an abandoned commercial building on North Hennepin Avenue to a pile of rubble.
The council voted unanimously Monday, Oct. 21, to OK a contract for construction management services with Rice Builders of Glencoe for project management services at 1128 Hennepin Ave. N., a deteriorating building the city owns since the owner walked away from it a few years ago. The city acquired the building via property tax forfeiture.

Senate committee looks at Hwy. 212 expansion project

The Minnesota Senate Capital Investment Committee made a stop in Bongards Tuesday morning as part of a three-day bus tour to take a look at Highway 212 and hear from area residents and businesses.
Carver County has requested $38 million in state funding towards the estimated $115 million project to expand two sections, totaling 10 miles, of Highway 212 to four lanes.
The project is proposed in two phases, the first which is almost completely funded and will expand the highway to four lanes from Carver to Cologne. The project is expected to begin in 2022.

Glencoe woman injured in crash on Highway 212

A Glencoe woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries when her vehicle crashed into a truck on Highway 212 in Sumter Township Monday night around 10:40 p.m.
Emily Marie Tonn of Glencoe, 41, was heading west on Highway 212 when the Chevrolet Equinox she was driving crossed the centerline and crashed into an eastbound Freightliner semi tractor driven by Marcus Lee Frazier, 36, of Shoreview, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
The state patrol report said alcohol was involved in the crash.
Frazier was not injured in the crash, according to the state patrol.

Bruce Vogt, 70, of New London

Bruce “Spoonie” Vogt, 70, of New London, died Saturday, Oct. 19, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, Oct. 23, 11 a.m., at Peace Lutheran Church in New London.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church and for one hour prior to the service at church.
The Johnson Funeral Home in New London is handling the arrangements. Its website is www.hafh.org where online obituaries and a guestbook are located.
