Mid-Minnesota Commission seeks county board approval of resolution, gets tabled

Community development director of the Mid-Minnesota Development Commission (MMDC) Matthew Johnson was seeking McLeod County Board support for the commission’s regional transportation coordination council (RTCC) phase two work plan on Tuesday, Aug. 20.
The board tabled the request until commissioners were able to get into a workshop with other entities involved with the MMDC to better understand the work plan. Member entities of the MMDC include McLeod, Renville, Meeker and Kandiyohi counties.

Deadline for seeking ‘beginning farmer’ tax credits is Oct. 1

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) Rural Finance Authority reminds beginning farmers and asset owners to apply by Oct. 1, 2019 for the tax credit for the sale or lease of land, equipment, machinery, and livestock.

Weeks after it quietly approved a medical leave of absence for its community education director Tina Schauer, the Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board has found a temporary replacement.

Local farmer dies in grain bin accident

A rural Glencoe farmer died Friday morning when he was submerged in corn inside a grain bin.
Gregory Fleck, 64, was pronounced dead at the scene just after noon at the farm on the 7700 block of 140th Street in Rich Valley Township. Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters from Glencoe and Plato were called to rescue Fleck at 11:22 a.m.
Fleck entered the grain bin, approximately 20 to 25 feet tall, to vacuum grain out of it, said McLeod County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Tim Langenfeld.

GSL ready to welcome students back for new year

After years of work on buildings and now parking lots at the Glencoe-Silver Lake School District’s facilities, the district is ready to start the 2019-2020 school year with a renewed focus on improving the education it offers students.

New computer class is code

When Glencoe Silver Lake Junior High-schoolers return to class Tuesday, they’ll find a new class on the docket suited to grow with students as they learn.
The new computer science – discoveries class is designed as an entry level class to computer science where students learn problem-solving, website development, some basic coding, animations and games, design process, data and society and physical computing. If there’s enough interest in the class, it could lead to the school offering a computer science principles class next year to ninth- through 12th-graders.

Letter to editor: Medical transparency law should keep people informed

To the editor,
Medical price transparency is an important tool for consumers to help them make informed decisions about their health care. Unfortunately, far too often, folks aren’t being adequately informed of the costs of medical procedures before receiving them. This leads to surprise billings and other problems that cause financial hardship.

A friend of mine used to say that people in hell want ice water. What we want, what we need and what we end up with in America are not always going to be the same.

Glencoe’s City Council had a tough night Monday, Aug. 19, and we’re not solely referring to the way the city council butchered consideration of a proposed change in the city charter.

Gregory Fleck, 64, of Glencoe

Gregory “Greg” Bernard Fleck, 64, of Glencoe, passed away Friday, Aug. 23, at his home in Glencoe.
A funeral service will be held today, Wed, Aug. 28, 4 p.m., at the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe, with internment following at the Glencoe City Cemetery.
Visitation will be two hours prior at the funeral chapel.
Pastor Linzy Collins will be the officiating clergy.
Leo Fleck Jr., Robert Fleck, John Jacobs, Sam Jacobs, Jamie Joe Fleck and Preston Goulet are the casket-bearers.
